Interesting, thank you!

@iamvr could you do the same on the other currencies I quoted and see what answers you get, please?

Sure, $76 in 1964 --> $649 in 2021. ZAR 76 in 1964 --> 7'236 in 2021.

Thanks very much @iamvr. There you have am
measure of the value of the investment. It would be interesting to see this now expressed as nett return on equity!

I know @gatorcpa always has a clear view on original cost, inflation and current worth/value.

Talking watches once more

there is a distinct difference between the bezel of the OPs watch, and the bezel of the dome dial watch also added to this thread ( bezel is flatter, with the chamfer more set off to the side)

i have a pair of 168.004s, one a pie pan dial, and one a dome dial, both from 1966, and the bezels are both of the flat type

Did Omega change the bezel design of the later 004s?

This is what I like most about OF.
Whilst discussing related topics members notice things that add to the detailed knowledge of the forum.

you are quite right.
It appears that the later .004s have a different bezel to the early .004s, the later bezel being more akin to the bezel on the .010s.
(edited for clarity)

It could of course be down to different case makers, I don’t know.

Early .004 on left, very late .004 on right.

Selection of .010s

Thanks @Peemacgee for showing them side by side

my two cases were both made by KB ( whoever they are/were) by the way, and are both 24.4x million serial numbers if this helps?

that was useful, as it made me look for the alternative.
Here is a thread showing the earlier, more angled, bezel as an SGR case.
-and the later bezel style being a KB case.

Greetings, one and all. I would just like to thank everyone who took part in this discussion for so doing and making this more than what I dreamed of, when I launched my plea for advice. A very special thank you to @pPeemacgee for assisting me over a rocky place in the beginning.

I'm going to bump this thread as James has eventually decided to sell his watch - and as it is a decent example with the unusually great provenance of a one owner from new watch, I'd rather see it stay here in the OF family.

I could have slipped it into the 'recommended' thread but this way you get to see the back story.

The watch is with a South African auction house and in a timed auction for the next few days.

best of luck if you bid.

I should have added an auction house pic or two as they're a wee bit clearer than the OPs pics
