16800 is a great buy and still good value without the pitfalls of some of the earlier Subs. Totally serviceable and useable. I have had an early gloss dial 16800 for a long time....

That is a great picture & superb patina too.

In addition to on line sources mentioned...While not pic heavy, its proving to be very useful. Relatively inexpensive compared to the glossy tomes. It will give you a good frame of reference to work from on the brands. Amazon.

Strange...I post there all the time and don’t have any problems. I have made good friends there.

That’s advice for newbies not you.

I saw all too often that people would get on the forum and post questions, and be excoriated for not reading the forums and doing searches first, just to find out they posted the question after searching but not using the right search terms and coming up with nothing.

Other people found they got banned right away for posting stupid questions, or questioning the answers of longtime members.

I was a first time poster once on TRF, I guess I’m lucky to have made it through intact. I see plenty of what you describe right here at OF also. It’s all part and parcel of an Internet forum I suppose.

I have a 16800 with WG surrounds too. I think the late years of this reference is underrated (I wouldn't dare say undervalued) because many automatically consider the 16610 due to the 904L steel, but 316L is just fine. Mine was glossy, but the dial has completely turned matte.

depends on how you define vintage. newer glossy dial after 90s are also going 30 years. That can also be considered as vintage.
personally, i think the vintage sub is way overpriced than its real value. Good 16800s are going beyond 10K+. Not sure i would call that "good value" any more.
