I just dont understand why you would use checks if you can use a card. We have the technology. Why do people in the north of france use checks? Tradition, a different concept of time? I'm probably to much effected by the city. Everything needs to be fast.

It鈥檚 the same with a fax machine. I still have to use that in my work. But a couple of years ago we had a trainee in his early 20's and he asked me what the hell is a fax machine. I explained: "You put a paper in with some text and somewhere else a paper comes out with the same text." He was quiet for a minute and then asked me: "why dont you use email?"

It is my opinion that the most rational beings among us is not all that rational. We do many things each day that, upon close examination, would make little sense.

I assume that you wear a watch and that you probably use a cellphone? I doubt anyone here is unaware that a either a cellphone or a cheap quartz watch is much better keeping time than a $100,000 vintage Daytona - or any new AP or VC or PP.

So let's admit that we wear watches as jewelry items then. But who needs jewelry? How rational is it to own and wear jewelry? What value is there in a owning and wearing a wrist adornment?

I own a 1966 automobile that I drive occasionally. I know that I am taking a higher risk of being injured or losing my life every time I drive it. So why do own it and why do I drive it then? I am not conscious of having a death wish?

Back to checks or cheques.

Partly it is a matter of habit to use them and in some cases it is not practical not to use them. I'm having a home built and many of the tradesmen I have hired wouldn't know how to take a payment in any other way . . . and many of them are young.

I am aware that I could save some time each month if I paid my monthly payments automatically. That one issue is probably a generational issue.

So when did you replace your Telex with a a fax machine? I'll have to look into that one as well. 馃榾

Because sometimes you can't use a card. There are lots of instances where we get a bill for something through the mail (or even by email), and there's really no other way to pay. In other instances, if you want to pay using a card, they will add on a surcharge.

It's probably a cultural thing. I live in the Netherlands where almost everything is digital. It鈥檚 been two years ago the last time I had cash money in my pocket.

Although I also live in NL for sure some cash is handy in case of a problem with paying by card in stores.

Remember in the good old days when we got a bill (acceptgiro) through the mail and had to drop if off at the bank.馃う

Haha. Yes. Except for the rich people. They pay their taxes in Antigua and the Cook Islands.

Cash/cheques/digital transfer/debit card... In Denmark only very few transactions are done by cash - mostly by elderly people holding up the queue in supermarkets. Even they wouldn't think of writing a cheque 馃榿

It's not a problem at flea markets either as all vendors are used to doing business by transfer via smartphone apps.

Bills are paid via online banking mostly, can't recall the last time I did any physical paperwork in that regard.

If he wants to wire you the funds, the best way to do the deal, he will need from you your bank's routing number and your account number. Check with your bank to make sure you received a wire and not some type of deposit into your account as a result of a check being deposited which can be returned for NSF several days later..

It is always the Dutch and Germans sitting outside Gas station/roadhouse in remote Australia waiting for the internet connection so they can pay for the fuel they just pumped into their hire car. ( not that they would make it to the next place over 300km away )

When I first moved to Aarhus, I had no habit of paying with cards but with cash until I realized I was being seen as some kind of criminal. Everyone looked at me strangely and it was not clear to anyone why I was walking with so much money in my pocket. ::facepalm1::

My previous job was in finance at a credit card processor here in the U.K. Most of our customer facing tech innovation was inspired by the Nordic attitude to cards and we were always a step behind, especially when it came to fraud tools and 3DS.

Nordic鈥檚 have a great attitude to banking IMHO.

Oh, I love it when the person in front of me at the supermarket breaks out the check book to pay.
They still take cheques where you live? Most retailers (and certainly supermarkets) in the UK haven't taken cheque payments for over ten years.

The only way to send a fax in my firm is by putting the fax number into Outlook and some clever software converts it to a fax and sends it.

Interesting to think that (as reflected in insurance costs for classic vehicles), you might not be, actually. You are probably taking a higher risk of being injured or losing your life if you actually have an accident, but your chances of having an accident overall may well be considerably lower, for many reasons.
