Acquired A Seamaster...

Emailed my Grandfather a week or so ago and this was his response (forgot to post here):

"Neither Betty nor I can remember that it has ever been serviced. It always kept time very accurately when I wore it regularly."

So yeah. I guess I can say I'm impressed that it still SEEMS to be keeping good time.
But I suppose that means I should probably get it in sooner rather than later...
I have worn it a few times (today included), but will probably stop.
Anyone have a ballpark figure on a "routine" service for an old Seamaster? Not really sure what to expect...
But I'll start looking into it.

Omega will charge $550 but they will do a restoration. You may or may not want this. (The people here will go completely apeshit if you send it there.)

My local watchmaker is a Rolex-trained CW21. He would charge me somewhere between $500 and $800 depending on the watch and its condition. He adjusts and regulates because I insist that it run as well as it can. Some will accept 30 seconds a day whereas I will not. That means extra parts and extra work, for example replacing the balance staff.

Some will claim that $250 is more than plenty to pay. I don't know where you live, you might find someone willing to work for that but it is a low price.

Find out about your watchmakers as best you can. Check for certifications. Ask for references. See if he has pictures of previous work.

AWCI.com has a searchabe database of watchmakers. If you're in the US, that;s good start. I would suspect BHI has a similar thing in Great Britain.

Nice. Thanks for the info about AWCI.
I'm on the west coast of Florida.
Definitely not going back to Omega. I've decided to leave the case/crystal totally alone and only want the movement to be addressed.
I have someone local that I'm pretty sure would be up to the task but have never used them in this regard.
Appreciate it @VetPsychWars

As @VetPsychWars said, pricing can be all over the map depending on where you live, the watchmakers certifications, overhead- etc. Any experienced watchmaker can do a full CLA on these but if it needs factory parts, they either need a swatchgroup parts account or know someone who does. In the end it’s worth it, you won’t find anything on the market comparable to the quality of these watches for their value plus the cost is a service- and yours is an heirloom so it’s priceless. Take care of it and it will outlive you.

And give you such pride and warm feelings as you pass it and the story on.
The watch will be ticking dutifully....
....carrying the memories.

Now you are sprinkling a little too much cheese on top 😉
