I have a FOIS so am partial to straight-lugs and your 'adjustment' looks really good.

I have a FOIS

You're already halfway there. Now go for the ST1 ::stirthepot::

Seriously though for anyone that has ST1 and FOIS I'd like to see how this combo looks with the sapphire.

No the really big leap was to drop some serious $ on the case AND the ST1, because prior to this mod the ST1 wasn't really my thing. 😁
Original stuff is nice and safe!

Great work, congrats!!!!! 😀👍::rimshot::::psy::

Absolutely love this. Any interest in selling the case itself?

looks very nice - i like it better than the original as well!

...you sure you don't want to keep the original twisted lug case for future?

What do you mean 😁 the original was untouched!

Latest configuration with telemeter bezel. Looks better than decimal or tachy imo!

What, the straight lug case? I believe @bernarddevos has a really nice one for sale! 👍

Shouldn’t the the 12 and 6 line up with the corresponding markers?

I was also quite curious about how to fit the bezel in, because I saw lots of pics where 12 was lined up at the marker and such.. but I figured out that's not correct by looking at vintage chronos from way back -

Very interesting! Although I will say that this apparently correct alignment screws with my OCD! 😗

The ST1 already drives me mad with its not-perfectly dividing decimals on its seconds markers.. 😁
So it has 2 tiny markers between one second. So between 1 second to 2 second, there's only 2 markers, so it would be 1 second, 1.3333... seconds then 1.6666.... seconds, then 1.99999.... seconds. 😲😲
That means it if you actually used this to time stuff and it landed on a marker between the second then...😲😲

Oh well, I suppose if we counted as "1 sec, 1 and 1-third sec, 1 and 2-third sec, 2 sec" it would be fine, and I might just be complaining about "one-third" instead of the dial marks, but hey, the original speedy doesn't have this problem and the FOIS has this issue too... 😵‍💫

No. The ST1 is actually correct and shows the elapsed time accurately. The chrono hand hits a sub marker every other tick. The 4 intermediate marks on the 1861 Moonwatch are wrong for the 6Hz movement and mean that the chrono hand only ever actually aligns with the full second. Yes it’s true that a 6Hz movement measures a funny fraction of a second (1/6th) but at least it’s accurately displayed here. The 321 movement Moonwatches ran at 5Hz so hit the 4 intermediated correctly, when they changed movements in 1969, they kept the same dial design.

I have posted on this at length before. It seems no one, including presumably NASA, has really ever noticed that the 861 Moonwatch has a serious flaw! They have remedied this on more recent designs such as the FOIS, 1861 LEs and non 1861 movement Speedmasters like the ‘57 or Broad Arrow models by using alternative numbers of sub marks, 2 for the 1861s and 3 for the 8Hz movements. Those can actually display a sub second interval accurately!

ps even though it looks odd, that Telemeter bezel is aligned correctly. It takes sound just under 5s to travel a mile at ground level depending on air pressure. The scale is used to measure distance in miles using a witnessed event and the time it takes for the sound to arrive. Popular with those in the Artillery.

See my addition above, it’s actually correct. Here is another, the inner blue scale is in Km rather than miles so the numbers get bigger quicker.

I just sold my ST1 (I found it wore a bit big for me) but I have a FOIS.

Wondering if ST dial & handset are available as service parts? Has anyone done that?

The speed of sound at sea level is approximately 1200 kilometers per hour. That’s 20 km per minute. So, after running the chrono for one minute the telemeter scale should read 20 km (12.4 miles).

Dang! So the post-321 861 speedys with the same marks as the 321 dials are the wrong ones. Ah- thanks for the education! 👍 I still don’t like how it becomes 1.333 seconds and such though. 😁
