A simple guide to buying a watch on this forum

We all have a choice of where we buy and where we sell...but there is a certain etiquette as both a buyer and a seller to which we should all abide by and tyrantlizardrex has outlined perfectly well. In a previous work-life, 'my word is my bond' was instilled from the start and is something that has never left me.
I don't disagree that there ought to be a certain etiquette as you have described. My point is that, when dealing in a public forum with non-members, you will inevitably have interactions that fall short of the standard.

Occasionally we've had dudes do that and have it implode in a big way, I remember one flipper turned dealer was in over his head financially and had arranged for himself to be the middleman on a fairly expensive at the time Speedmaster. He fronted the money to the guy with the watch on credit or with his rent money or something, received the watch, then the buyer he had lined up for it backed out and he got stuck with it, then turned around and tried to return it claiming condition issues that didn't exist. That guy got banned long ago but a few have tried to make a business of that since then and also gotten caught / had their privileges revoked.

Man, all the crazy behind the scenes happenings that you have mentioned over the years! You should write an article about them - I'm sure we'd all love to read it!

Side story on this topic...

My father negotiated for a living, was quite good at it, but he is generally easy to deal with. About 15 years ago, when Craigslist was becoming a thing in North America, I helped him list some quite nice patio furniture online for sale. My mother and he were moving, the furniture was barely used, and he wanted to get rid of it, so we listed it at a throwaway price.

Multiple people reached out, but one individual said they would take it. I marked it sold and arranged to meet at my parents' residence on a Saturday afternoon. At the agreed time, an SUV with a trailer pulls up, clearly there to pick up the furniture. The gentleman then proceeds to offer half of the asking price...

My father looked him dead in the eye and said he would gladly burn the furniture on the lawn right there and then rather than taking any amount less than the asking price, given the value of our collective time.

The gentlemen looked shocked, but the full asking price was then paid, and we assisted in loading the items on the trailer. I've never forgotten that interaction; people can be scummy, but life is tough, and all we can do is act within our principles.

I’ve had experience like that with a boat trailer and a car. In both cases a price was agreed and negotiation was attempted at time of pick up. For the latter, I just threatened to walk away. For the former, I began to call Public Radio to donate the car. In both cases the agreed price was then rendered. I blame shows like Pawn Stars.

I don’t know man, I see two more watches in your future. Good stuff.
Or I could get a smaller box. I would be cheaper!

Don’t waste time asking about a watch you clearly aren’t going to buy and can’t afford.
A sale is not a free question session.

Having a chat with a seller lately where 50% of contact about his watch for sale want to know more about the watch than actually buy it… one actually asked where he would find a similar Watch cheaper in his price range 🤦

It's true. Some people seem to think that a sales listing is an invitation for a casual chat about the watch.

Preach! I recently sold a Deluxe Constellation on eBay...first auction winner decided it was too small for him and backed out although the specs were detailed. The winner of the second complained that the second hand was behaving oddly. It was running fine when I sent it to the authenticator.

I need to stop replying to 0 or low post members that ask for more info and pictures without even introducing themselves. It never leads to anything but a waste of time on my side.

I’m in the same boat. Been a member over a year and a half. But getting closer…

Something you probably should consider (if you haven't) is that it isn't as simple as hitting the 200 post count. If no one knows you, what reason do they have to buy anything from you? Unless you have something truly unique I am going to buy from someone that I have talked to on this forum or that is an established seller. It's definitely not as simple as hitting the 200 post count limit and instantly getting a sale at the price you want.

I am not saying this to criticize you, it is genuinely something you should consider. Much of this community buys from community members they know or have talked to.

I admire your reserve. 😀

It turned out (as it often does with obsessions) that I wasn't done. I won the bidding on one and sent the seller the money (no questions asked) and the other one, I just paid what the seller wanted and even set up a Zelle account because that was his preferred payment method. I got the watch the next business day. Amazingly simple. Now I'm done haha.

OF is not predominantly a sales forum. Contributing òn the forum allows people to get to know you a little, friendships are formed and some level of trust accumulates. I, and others, might be reluctant to purchase from a seller who has just reached 200 posts without that comfortable feeling.
