Interesting that the OP brings up the ck2777 as a challenger to the Explorer, since the Railmaster, also noted as a good challenger, is a descendant of the ck2777.

Sure, it's a 5601 114.

Anyway, one doesn't need an amagnetic to have a Explorer challenger - any DS will do just fine in comparison.

Hmmm, looks like the jig is out; I know this is an unrealistic price (I think?), but check this out.

For me, the Explorer with its screw down crown literally wees over the said competition

Manual movement, white dial, no screw down crown.. But it is 36mm and with similar 3-6-9 dial 😀
Imho I prefer the 18mm lugs on a 36mm case than the 20mm lugs of the Explorer.

Absolutely sexy. I wish I was able to find one at a reasonable price.

Omega Railmaster is amazing - a true chameleon depends on the light (black, brown, blue...)
It is not big, I have a 7 inch wrist size

How true, I wasted a long time looking for original and in good condition and finally gave up when the prices went mad, These seem to have been very mistreated watches. Perhaps people took exception to the name 😜

As much as I love the styling of the Explorer, I think the Omega is a more intersting watch, and not similar enough to the Explorer to really compare them- apples to oranges in this case.

Now if we are going to compare Explorer look-alikes, I'll throw the Wyler 660 HD into the ring anyday.

Considering I would need to hit the lotto to justify getting a 1060 Explorer, this will scratch the itch for me for now.

Is it fair to say that anything with a Mercedes hand that's not a Rolex was copying Rolex? Or was that a common generic design back in the 60s and 70s? I've often wondered because there are many really cool 1960s Citizen professional divers with Mercedes hands and also many 90s Tag Heuers, but I've always hesitated. The Mercedes hand always cheapened them for me because I thought they were trying to boost their own fortunes by copying Rolex's hand design. I'd be happy to be convinced otherwise though.

It would reach aprx. half the starting bid in an open auction.

Here are some Mercedes hands on my vintage Eberhard, so old that Eberhard is looking into their archives to find out any info about it

I’m surprised one of these hasn’t been posted yet.

To me, this is the closest.

I agree- the second one is the closest to an Explorer so far 😉

Some very nice watches here. However, if what you really want is a 1016, and you purchase one of these as a compromise, you may find yourself thinking “not a 1016” every time you look down at your watch. Ask me how I know.

Yes. Although I am for the moment burned out on the 1016, it has a peculiarity, at least for me, of being so "just right" that it's hard for anything else to step in. Many watches have the effect of being a variation on a theme, and that leaves room for other variations, but the 1016 occupies the bullseye so completely that variations (insofar as they feel like variations) pale by comparison. I can still say this even though at the moment I'm not entirely convinced that they aren't clunky and ugly.

No, I started wondering that even before I rediscovered vintage Omegas and bought a 2846 with delicate and subtle "quartered arabic numerals". 😀 Yes, I am starting to think about something with a black dial.

Hey!
Here is my baby explorer!
Seems a little delicate though to get dirty...
Love those 3-6-9 dials!
