Giving this thread a bump so some of the members who recently listed ubiquitous watches at stupid-expensive prices can hopefully read it and realize that a ___________ (fill in an un-rare brand) from the ____________'s (fill in a decade that's relatively recent like the 80's) is NOT rare nor worth the price of a decent automobile.

I don't think you can buy a decent automobile for $800 USD, so you're safe 😀

Real world example for you cement heads that still don't get it.... a whole 3 hours from listing to payment in full:

https://omegaforums.net/threads/pre-1930-waltham-wire-lug-wristwatch-in-rose-gold.78308/

hmmmm, maybe I should change "cement head" to something softer so I'm not accused of continuing toxicity. 🙄 😜 So my personal lesson learned for the day is that "Calling them like you see them" and "pulling no punches" can be simplified to being "toxic" in this day & age. ::stirthepot:: Guess I'm old school. A dinosaur. 😁

Oh, come on. You posted a steal of a deal and you know it.

I was surprised it took a whole three hours. Hell, even I was sorely tempted.

Somebody got very lucky, I think.

Price'em right, and they sell. I think you'll find I have a history of being fair to begin with, and happily taking 'constructive criticism' if I'm a bit aggressive at first. If I took the time to look, I'd be willing to wager at least a quarter of my listings (or more) end within 24 hours for full asking price - sometimes with offers from members to add a few bucks for shipping even though the post shows USPS shipping included.

You know what else is pertinent to this thread? I'm probably the closest amateur member to being a professional dealer because I flip so many watches, yet you won't find me trying to score huge. This forum, and this hobby, used to be comprised of gentlemen who dealt fairly with each other. Now, it's being overrun by profit seekers with pie in the sky asking prices and scammers. That's just one more step in the evolution that I predicted years ago, and I'm not one to sit idly by and watch it deteriorate. I'm not afraid to say what's on my mind - either from my keyboard, or in person.... and you can ask anyone that knows me in the real world to verify.

“Money changes everything.”

I was also thinking about this regarding the Buzz Aldrin and his children thread.

I agree that was a nice one, and if I had taken a shine to it, I may have been tempted.

On the other hand, and echoing what an earlier post said: while constructive criticism is great, making it sound like someone's watch just won't sell can make them, especially if they have a degree of desperation, feel even worse. Yes they want to get some money back, and they may not know that their value is way overpriced. And even if it isn't overpriced and is right, and still no one seems to want it, they may feel that the only option is to lower the price even more, or let the market decide on eBay.

I won't deny that I have sold a fair few watches and parts on OF, and I've also had to reduce prices on occasion before a sale went through. The hard part is if money is tight, and you do take a watch to eBay due to lack of interest, there's another lesson there to be had if you send the watch to auction. For desirable, well known watches, no problem, the punters will be there. For less well known/desirable watches which you spent a considerable amount of money on...

Which brings me to another point - unless you are a dealer, you should have a watch budget to cushion any blows from buying/selling watches that is separate to your living expenses. Then there should be no problem in pricing your watch fairly, and don't get discouraged by a lack of interest.
