A question about Speedmaster serial numbers

I understand that Speedmasters have a different numbering system than other Omegas to correlate SN to year of production. Does this apply to all Speedmasters or just the professional? For example, if I'm trying to find the production year of a Speedmaster Mark 4.5 would I look at Speedmaster SNs or standard Omega SNs? Thanks in advance.

Applies to 321 and 861 movements

So just to clarify, this would not apply to a Mark 4.5 with the Lemania 5100-based 1045 movement?

At times the Speedmaster series does correspond with general production. A Mk4.5 is presumably from the 1970s, during that era the numbers were fairly in sync. What are the first 2 digits? If for instance they are somewhere from 32-39m then I would say it can be dated with a fair amount of confidence.

The one I'm looking at is a 45, which would make it a 1982 if it follows the standard numbering convention, but later if it followed Speedmaster numbering conventions.

It would likely follow regular numbering so 1982-3 sounds about right then. An extract would tell you for sure.
