Hello everybody !
I am close to finalize the purchase of this one, which to me looks very attractive but before that I thought I'd ask the experts here ! So what do you guys think of this gold capped ?
A supposed '66 according to its number ( 24 xxx) which I would buy without strap/buckle and get serviced after I've received it.
Thanks for your comments !

Two obvious issues with this watch: Wrong crown, and overpolished, particularly both the upper lugs.
Will wait for more experts to chime in.
Good luck in your hunt!

Thanks for your comments ! yes, wrong crown, but not a problem for me : If I buy it, I will first run with this one, and will take my time to look for an appropriate one.
Overpolished ? not sure : it's clear that if you compare with a stainless steel version, there the lugs edges are a lot sharper because they've been machined, but this one is a gold capped, and my impression is that they are more rounded up originally.

Don't act too fast and take a look at this one concerning lugs:

Wait for more feedback but I'm pretty shure 2000 [EDIT: Euro] bucks is far too much for this one

Not possible zooming into theses pictures but still visiable that the dial has spottings:

Not shure but the hands look bent:

You are right that the gold cap wears out more than steel given the softer material, so it's harder to find sharp full gold and gold capped examples, but they were equally sharp off factory I believe. Hence, I have to agree with above comments that this particular example is overpolished.

just under the €2000
Way too expensive for a pie pan with date and and gold cap, particularly in this condition.

Looks good to me - a very nice dial. The lug edges are a bit smoothed, but I have seen a lot worse - even in the glorified stainless steel cases. The price is too high: try to get it lower.

+1 regarding price, but then the question is how much time you’re prepared to invest in the search. Cheap, perfect, quickly - you can’t have em all.

Dial is spotty ($600) wrong crown ($200).

Don't pay more than $1300.

So what do you reckon is the reasonable price nowadays ? So far I've seen lower prices on pan pie, with date, onyx markers inserts, full dial script, but the dials were either prickled or scratched, and the cases often much more polished or badly scratched, medallion wasn't very sharp etc... My impression is that prices have gone up quite suddenly over the past year, and maybe I am less affected by the price increase than most of you since I have only started to search 4 months ago, and I can only witness the current price level ; not sure if you follow what I am trying to explain... When I look at 3 - 4 years old threads, price for a dog leg pie pan was probably ranging between 900 and 1500€ depending on condition, but this time seems to be gone - in my view, these prices nowadays seem rather in the region of 1500 to 2500€, not taking into account high end price sellers who ask for 3000 and more. There are loads of 168.005 priced around 1300-1500, but the ones I've seen at those prices were not very nice. But let me know if I am overestimating today's prices !

The correct crowns look amazing but they are horrible to actually use to wind, which you'll need to do if you don't wear it for awhile. Agree with other comments re: price. If you aren't set on having a chronometer then you may find a non-chronometer one cheaper.

Yours is not a bad watch and would be nice on the wrist. But since the audience here are mainly collectors, this example is not in collector's condition, imho.

Unless you like gold, many folks prefer all steel or all gold. Sorry if I am overstepping as you didn't ask this. Just don't settle for something if you are worried about not finding a watch. The way it goes you'll see your perfect watch one week after you buy a good enough watch.

Best of luck.

I agree with MTV's response. It took a long time for me to find the right dynamic watch. But, glad I waited and in the meantime educated myself as to the subtleties and nuances of the watch. Price / condition / timeliness of the sale -- it's probably pretty rare to have all three occur at the same time and two of three are probably more likely.

You can change a wrong crown, case back or even the movement but a bad dial will stay with the watch forever. You have to look at the dial every day, even when it is in your drawer, you still know it is there with a not perfect dial!.
From my experience, be patient and wait for a nice one. It can be expensive but it is worthy.

In the last few years, I paid more than $2000 for each of these. Shipping and tax extra.

Agreed that gold is a softer material compared to stainless steel. However the gold capped lugs don't leave the factory looking so rounded.
IMHO, the dial and overall condition of your watch is OK except for the wrong crown and soft lugs. The crown will set you a few more hundreds, and your total cost will around 2.3k if not more. It is the soft lugs which will bother me more. Price for a good stainless steel pie pan is generally higher than a gold capped, and USD 1500 may get you a good stainless steel one if you are patience enough. Like many have said, the joy of watch collecting is sometimes in the hunt itself.

Good luck in whatever your decision is, and enjoy wearing the watch in good health.

I think its a nice watch and I dont think it is overpolished. Crown can be easily swapped. I would buy it for 1500 -if you paid 2000 I dont think its way too much. These are all personal decisions mind you. Hope you enjoy it

Well first of all, my deep thanks to all your valuable comments ! It's quite interesting (and not so surprising) to see that some emphasize on one aspect, some on another, but let me come back separately on some of the points raised...

Yes I realized that generally all stainless steel pie pan is largely favored ; though I very much like the combination stainless / gold of the gold capped, I am also attracted by them.

I have to admit your comment here really makes sense to me; as I am (still) new in this search, I might be a bit too impatient, and not selective enough ; I'll think it over, but probably you're right that I should look for a better dial condition, and maybe accept that it'll then cost me a few more hundreds. (I hate saying that ! 😡😉)
