A FedEx question for frequent sellers here

Shipped many watches via FedEx, never had the question of 'what's in it?'. They scan it, give me a receipt and I'm on my way. They don't need to know what is in it or if it is insured or not. The local UPS store used to question me as to the contents, but then a new licensee took over and they don't ask any longer. I had one nosey USPS clerk who wanted to know what was in my registered parcel insured for $10k. But any other time they never ask. It really depends on how nosey or curious the clerk is. They can ask if it contains prohibited items like lithium batteries or other items that have to go by ground.

Last month I shipped a fairly large box containing 3 watches (total weight 17 lbs) by FedEx, not a peep from them as to what was in the box. It was none of their business, it had 3rd party insurance.

How many bricks got it up to 17lbs?

Asking for a friend.

One heavy GO polished wooden box, one round AP steel case with a flip top lid like a gas cap, and a regular, generic faux leather GO box. The outer cardboard boxes, plus the paperwork, plus a lot of padding, and the outer shipping box added up to 17 lbs. Obviously the watches themselves didn't weigh much, they were all on leather straps.

Of course they need to know whats in it or whether it needs to be insured. Gee Fedex I insured a crystal vase and you guys broke it. Its worth $78,890 dollars only because I said so. Please pay up.

The shipping company isn't there to advise you if you need insurance, that's up to you. It's your responsibility. The amount of indemnity from FedEx, UPS or the USPS is minimal, never assume consigning it to them means you are insured for much. Buy insurance from third party insurers and leave UPS or FedEx out of the equation. Shipping by USPS, you have to use their method, but if your vase is worth $50,000 than you better register it for $50,000 and pay the registration fee. And if it gets broken or lost be prepared for some tough questions on how it was packed and its true value, they aren't taking your word for it.

Ahh, OK.....I thought maybe this was a bit of subterfuge to foil inside jobs.

Not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me.

nice to hear a FedEx employee is acting as good Samaritan, but the questions were most definitely out of his lane.

Yeah, I had a FedEx guy ask me what kind of underwear I had on. I said boxer briefs, he asked for a pic, and then I just had to put the brakes on...

So I went to FedEx to ship a watch I sold here. The guy ask me what's in it and what the value is and told me they only cover 1000 max on jewelry.

Doesn’t the fine print exclude watches ?

Then things got weirder.

FedEx guy: Did you sell this online?
Me: Yes.
FedEx guy: There's a lot of scammers out there. Are you sure you got paid?
Me: Yes.
FedEx guy: Was that through PayPal?
Me: Yes.
FedEx guy: Did you get an email saying you got paid?
Me: Yes. I got the money. It's all good.
FedEx guy: Are you sure? Can I see your PayPal transaction history?

Of course I stopped him there. Anyone had similar experience like this before? Or does this situation seem fishy?
Perhaps a tad intrusive. He’s trying to help you. I’m impressed. You May have been obviously flummoxed by the low insurance threshold. I’m sure they have been getting dragged into more disputes of late. IMO, they hire good people, always a cut above competitors. They always get a bit tweaked about watches and jewelry.

No idea. Shipped a watch through UPS before. I told them it’s a watch and put a 6k insurance on it.

You only thought you had insurance, if the parcel went missing they would refer you to the fine print and refuse your claim. They would refund the insurance fee and pay you the maximum under their terms of service, which is pretty low. Never assume that because they took your money for insurance you actually are covered.
