A fake watch at work..

Years ago, when I was finishing up my university, I decided to buy myself a nice watch(nicest that I could afford).I was shopping here and there, apparently I could afford only Orient watch. One of the friends of mine made a suggestion to buy a replica IWC watch. When I asked him why would I buy fake, his answer was: Well there is only one person would know it's fake, it would be you. Rest of the people had never seen the real one and don't have enough knowledge to identify it....10 years later my Orient still tics. Friend's of mine fake Rolex dayjust lasted 1 year... I think a lot of people have the same mentality, that no one would question their watches authenticity and it's really sad.
In your particular situation, I don't know if you did right not telling him that his watch is fake. I would send him a YouTube link with fake vs real watch review or something. Sooner or later he will find out it was fake, and when it happens you are going to look stupid in his eyes.
P.S. My boss is wearing an oversized watch with 3 fake sub dials and light blue dial that you could see from miles away ($10 from Walmart) and he is trying to show off with it every time.(no respect there)

Here we had a recent situation where some politicians took what they either thought were

1. Real Rolex and therefore accepting potentially compromising gifts from a Chinese businessman
2. Knew they were fake and have no respect for international protection laws (while screwing down on the Australian public for pirated downloads, etc)
3. Are just ignorant d******ds

Their PR eventually tried to throw the focus off these hard done by pollies by accusing the Chinese of hiding transmitters in the watches...seriously, guys?

https://www.theguardian.com/austral...designer-watches-assuming-they-were-were-fake

So what hope is there in stamping out the fake shite if even the "leaders" are prepared to embrace them?

I wonder if people think that every time they see someone wearing a Rolex, it is a fake. I would imagine that might get annoying for owners of real Rolex watches who are constantly being asked if their watch is fake.

I imagine this is irritating as well. Part of the reason why I like Omega watches is that people unless they are into watches don't know if its expensive or not.

I think there are far more fakes out there than people realize. But when identifying one in casual circumstances, you have to realize it's tough to tell with good fakes except under pretty close inspection. Regardless, unless you can stop somebody from buying one your exposure of the fake doesn't do much good. I always wonder in these cases how the fake was purchsed. Rolex Celinis aren't exactly common. Where did the parents get it?

I have often wondered if anyone has spotted a fake watch on the wruw thread and what would the etiquette be of pointing it out. I love seeing what everyone is wearing and how much variety there is but some watches I see make me wonder. I don't know enough about every brand to know though , you know ?

It is annoying as hell. I used to own a few Rolexes and hated that crap. Even my boss's boss at one company who was the regional manager (who knew EXACTLY what I made every year and knew I could afford a Rolex) saw me wearing a DateJust in the store and the first thing he said was "Is that real?" like it was an automatic reaction. He immediately apologized.

Yes, it has happened. On Watch Talk Forums, a new member posted a wrist shot of a fake Daytona (had the calendar subdials - the obvious tell) and he got lambasted. Trying to pass off a fake on a forum full of watch nuts is either trolling or asinine.

I was at a Christmas party last year wearing my Orange 3313 POC and a guy came up to me and said hey I've got the same watch. It was a first gen PO in orange. It was one of those good fakes but the bezel was wrong and didn't have the Orange "overstamp" on the triangle and the pearl was wrong. I let it go until he volunteered that he got a great deal on it for 500 bucks. At that point I caved and told him Why he got a great deal.

Also a fake 2nd gen PO got posted to wruw the other day. No one picked it up. It was correct with
Closed numbers but they where painted not applied.

I have called a few out on Facebook Omega pages when they post and boy was I told to keep my mouth shut. They get a little butthurt! Kind of like when you call some one out on Ebay trying to sell a fake. They become almost belligerent!

Has anybody had a similar situation? Would you have asked if it was real or would you have done the same as me and just handed it back with a smile?

Jack

It depends on how well I know the person, but I would have done the same thing as you did - just smile and tell him it's nice, unless I was specifically asked for my opinion.

I have been in similar situations involving antique items I am fairly knowledgeable about. Even when I was specifically asked for my opinion or to authenticate the term in question, some people just did not take it very well when I told them that what they got were fake.... So unless I am specifically asked for my opinion, I would just smile and say "It's nice."

I hope it got removed and the member was called out about it. No watch forum tolerates fakes AT ALL. It goes against everything we stand for.

Screw'em. They deserved to be tar & feathered, then forced to watch the ShopNBC hucksters repeatedly hawk their junk over & over & over & over.

Smile and wave! You showed your class. I don't think it would have benifitted you in any way to express your knowledge.
I have done the same many times, I would only feel gutted for someone if they truly believed their watch was genuine.

I quite like the fact that other watch brands and mainly Omega can fly under the radar and you will only get noticed by other people with the interest ( I am yet to meet somebody as interested in the hobby as myself yet in person ). Rolex seem to be bought by everyone from WIS to joe blog's wanting something shiny on his wrist to show he has a large wallet.

I also do not get why somebody would post a fake watch on a forum like this. I guess they imagine if they can fly under the radar here then they will be just fine out in the real world.

I called someone out on a Facebook Omega PO page and said, " You post your fake watch on an Omega watch fan page for Authentic Omega watch fans and don't expect to get outed?" "You're either dumb or in denial."

I get the feeling that the " my parents bought the watch for me " may potentially be a story to authenticate the watch to myself. Who knows..

A dear friend of mine who I have done a lot of business with always worn $200 fake Rolexes. At the time we were dealing mostly in antique advertising and porcelain signs so the watch wasn't an issue. Once I moved into wrist watches our friendship has taken a huge hit with his collection fake Rolexes. Once you get hooked with what a watch maker goes through to put a high end watch you feet cheated with anything but the real deal. Not everyone has thousands for wrist watches, but you can pick up several killer vintage pieces for less than $500 if you stay with the hunt! As of last month he told me he's saving for a real Rolex....They all come around eventually

I have never had anyone ask if the Rolex I am wearing is real or not, probably because they take one look at me and immediately assume it can't possibly be real.

As for the OP I probably would have done the same. I wouldn't want to have that awkward conversation if I didn't have to.

Just a thought for everyone. What if a family member bought you a watch for a holiday/birthday and it was fake, but they didn't know. They just thought it would be a great gift when they saw it for the watch lover in the family.

I love my friends and family enough to want them not to have been ripped off, or to give them a serious telling off for supporting organised crime if they'd bought it in knowledge of being a fake.

Fake goods are Never acceptable, and Never a victimless crime.
