I work as part of a large team who work closely with a small number of customers over years to build relationships that let us help them. One of my key contacts was known as experienced, no nonsense, no bullshit kind of guy who had an extensive, very desirable watch collection. One day he was wearing a tourbillon labelled patek. I looked at him hard - he was a senior guy but there was no way he would be able to afford that class of watch. I gave him a chance - knowing the horrific backlog patek have for servicing I asked him about his experience - he looked at me with a flash of panic, clearly suspecting I knew, but tried to bluff, telling me the last service cost 'over £400'. I said nothing to him, but explained to my team that every one of his watches was fake (you don't wear a nasty fake if you have the option of precision machinery) and that he was perfectly capable of bullshit. It's changed the way my whole team work with him and the insight is given has helped us hugely....

While we're talking about fake watches, someone has offered to me a VC "replica" chronograph ...I know, I bought some legit watches from that person, don't know why he would offer something like this to me. I am kindly denied it and let person know that I have only authentic watches in my collection and never had any interest in "replicas".

fuel for the fire: I read in a watch magazine recently (Watch Time I think) that the Swiss made 30 million watches last year.

And there were 40 million knock-offs made.

So faking it is bigger business than the real thing!

I think I had a girl friend that operated that way actually.....

"Fakes better than originals " says Jack Ma. Read this then

To be serious, Chinese manufacturers are getting better and better with their goods, but because of the labor costs and materials availability in China, it is almost impossible to compete with prices and quantities(and quality of the goods yet) they could produce. Also, international court system can't stop them from copy ( and steal intellectual property).
Probably a lot of people remember what BMW went through, when they were trying to sue CEO, Chinese car manufacturer.

So I have noticed on the wrist of one of my colleagues what appears to be a Rolex Cellini in the last few weeks. I don't know him hugely well so haven't had the chance to have a good look at it till yesterday.

So was chatting to him about Christmas and the watch I have bought for it and he mentioned his watch. I asked to have a closer look only to see it is quite clearly a poor quality replica ( it had a see through case back and the general quality all over was very poor ), I asked where he got it and he said his parents bought it for him for his 25th birthday and that he has the box and papers in his safe. I simply smiled and said it was nice and handed it back not wanting to be rude or to let him know that it is not real if he is unaware.

Has anybody had a similar situation? Would you have asked if it was real or would you have done the same as me and just handed it back with a smile?

Jack

So here's my 2 cents...

Young colleague, knows he's talking to the office watch expert, realises he can't get away with the fake watch. Gives you a story that you cannot refute without being rude. Does a 25 yr old have a safe? Why mention box & papers at all? Even when talking to friends who collect, they never mention box & papers unless we're buying or selling.

So now you know & he knows you know.

Chinese manufacturers have no shame. They say their products are better and cheaper than the original products. Case in point, the iStablizer portable gimbals made for smart phones are being sold in the States for about $300. However you can buy this product directly from the manufacturer in China for less than $200 (no tax, free shipping) although they use their own brand. Obviously if you go to the Omega factory & if they should be able to sell you a watch you can rest assure that you will be buying at full retail (in order to protect their dealers).
