9Crt Gold Omega Case Question

Hi All,

would someone more knowledgeable be able to chime in here and tell me if this 9crt cased Omega has a Swiss or Australian made case. The watch was a 25 yr service award to an employee of an Australian company. The Handley Watch Case Company in Melbourne made cases for Rolex, Tudor, Cyma & Omega (among others) and was thinking this case might be??

cheers,

Konrad (lambstew)

To the best of my knowledge 9ct cases are typically from Great Britain. Another member may have more info.

It seems that 9ct cases were from a number of countries but predominately from those of the British Commonwealth.

Handley cases were usually marked with the Handley symbol, however I suspect that many of the 9ct cases made for Omega may not be stamped.

I'm not aware of any other watch case company in Australia in that period.

More info on a similar watch here.

Thanks for that. I don’t know if any Handley company records survived as such records would answer a lot of questions. One well known company advert from the 1930’s advertises that they make cases for Rolex.

I own several Rolex pieces from the 1930’s one of which is a Rolex signed gold filled case, while the other is also gold filled however marked “Hantily”, which was the predecessor to Handley (Handley & Tilly parted ways in 1934).

At some point (in my opinion) in the 1930’s Handley made cases for Rolex evolved into Rolex signed cases. I think there is a slight difference in the quality of the case and the markings compared to Swiss

As good as the Handley cases are they are not as good as their Swiss counterparts but make for an interesting variation as are their Dennison cousins..
