Ahhhhh OK. Thanks for the clarification @Archer, that doesn’t make it seem as bad as it looks. I honestly thought that was for the servicing without the parts.

Well it could be - the point is without knowing for certain, making a judgement is pretty difficult.

There is a lot wrong with that estimate. Firstly, case number 143.8111 doesn't exist. Secondly no 351 bumper movement was made as late as 1959 and with a 17.99m serial, it would have used a 5XX rotor auto movement surely (I note that billed him for a new rotor, further backing this up). It doesn't add up, based on that paperwork, I wouldn't touch it even if the dial had been left be!

Yes it's a 14381 with what should be a cal 551. With a 17.9 million serial that is in good range. The wrong info is on the Somlo service quote, not the Omega service receipt.

The question remains: what was it like before Omega got their hands on it?

That said, this is some of Southampton’s least sympathetic work. ::facepalm1::

Also some curious pricing for service - an 861 was considerably less than £800 to service at Omega in 2013, when this work was done.

Why so much for a three hander?

I will be sure to visit them if I want cases that look as soft as butter 😲

You’re not allowed to visit Somlo... once you saw what they do to watches, and what they call “mint”... well, let’s just say they’d never find the bodies. 😉

Oh wow, so sorry to see this! Not even the South Korean polished/refinished specials on eBay look that shiny.
Omega really needs to finally step up their vintage service game....

I guess Omega caters to the taste of rich russians who wants shiny things, they do not give purists like us much thought.

Now I'm at it: what do you think of this? https://www.instagram.com/lapinist_watchrestoration/

They would appear to be several notches above some of the cack-handed, Dremel-wielders that get featured on here. Not everyone goes for the honest wear and tear/aged/characterful look. There is obviously a market for this sort of thing, and (imho) we should give credit to those who carry out this work with skill and care.

A great lesson for the Constellation collector as to why you should never send your vintage piece to Omega for (very expensive) servicing. It will come back very shiny and having zero collector's value if you're not careful...

Looks like a service dial with a lop-sided star, horribly polished to death case, wrong Omega crown and to top it off a nice £800 bill 🤦

...however, we don’t know how was the condition of the watch before it was serviced...
