‘76 speedmaster posting

I’m really interested in this watch since I’ve been looking to get into vintage watches. The seller says it’s from 1976 and the reference is 145022. The condition is a bit rough so I want to make sure I don’t overpay, if I decide to jump on it. Movement and dial look good to me, but I’d love an extra set of eyes to help me out. A quick google search dates this back to 1979 (based on number on movement) but the casebook does clearly say 76, so I don’t know if that is cause for concern? No box or papers, as can be expected. Any thoughts, concerns, warnings, insults, etc are appreciated, Thanks. BTW, seller is asking $3500

All the parts look original, but that caseband has been polished like crazy. The inconsistent algae color of the lume is kind of concerning too. I'd try and negotiate the watch down to 3000$ or lower, assuming that it has been serviced and is keeping time well as of right now.

Serial # is in range. It is not a steal though the bracelet is a good bonus. Maybe at 3k it would be a go for me. But does the dial and overall condition speak to you? The case does look pretty knocked around.

Watch was was about sept 77 production.

125.022-76 was made through early 78. It was replaced by the identical to late 77 145.022-76 production.

I’d want to see it under natural light to see the lume better. 3.2k is in-line IMHO with that nice of a DNN correct bezel. 3.5 is not a bad price assuming it looks good under natural light.

Oh I forgot to add my price was head only!!!

3500 with bracelet is good! Figure about 700 for that one.

Probably should have mentioned that the seller said the clasp was replaced at some point.

That still looks like a vintage 1171 in keeping with that period. But to be sure you can ask for a picture of the flip side...

Yes I do about the 633/1171. Try and find a good one. A new 1171/whatever is 900.

This is marked as period correct not the later /model.

Re DNN. These are getting harder to find in excellent condition and many 145.022 of what ever vintage have very poor ones or later replacements.

My valuation is based on a decent case and a dial/ handset that looks good in natural light. That bezel has to be at least 400 or so now and adds a hundred or so to value. 3k head only I think the piece is a must buy. 3500 with the bracelet and DNN is a great price. Assuming the lume is attractive in natural light.

Ok minute hand lume is trashed and some moss on some hour markers. Perhaps messed up hands with missing paint. Dock 200-300 or so for replacement hands.

Finally looked at it on a real monitor.

The problem with a price is that you have to be happy with the watch in the long run. I've overpaid for some because I just HAD to have them and others which were "bargains" have gone again: At the end of the day you must decide whether it's worth the money to you. If you want to buy it as an investment, don't!

I’ve just been after a speedmaster professional after I tried a new one on a while ago. I was considering newer ones, but then realized I could get something like this for similar money. I really do like this one so I am going to really try and get it, but if not, I’ll be aiming for a 1998 speedie. I don’t plan on investing, but I do want something that is historically significant.

So I ended up buying a more modern speedy just for some piece of mind while wearing it everyday (serviced). Should be arriving soon. The seller for this one only got back to me now with a price of 3.2k. If any of you guys wanna jump on this, I think it looks like a decent deal.

Lets put it this way : If you spend 3.2k on that watch now, and day in day out you look at the dirty lume, chipped paint on the hands and scratched-off 't-swiss-t' (and especially if you carry on looking at Speedies and see the really beautiful ones), how might you feel in 6 months?

a) happy?
b) 'i wish i had my $3.2k back, because look at this sweeeeeeeeeet beauty that only costs $800 more than I spent'?

Worth a mention : when I see ads with dials and movements out of the body (especially looking like this) I ask myself WHY SELLER WHY? (Usually I stop there)

My feeling : you can do better for $3200. I am certain of it.

Remember : 'condition condition condition'. This would be the place where I post a pic of the Speedy I got for 3200...but that won't help you, so I wont 😀
