·As the winding gear/reversing wheel of the 550 series movements get increasingly rare (and expensive) I had always been wanting to make some tools to open them up and see if I can't work out what was going wrong.
once I got one of my faulty wheels apart I was surprised as I didn't see any obvious wear but when I put all the parts into some benzine to clean them up one of the brass halves (the inferior winding wheel according to an old omega manual I was able to find) completely separated from the inner geared ring.
close inspection of the other side suggested they were originally riveted/peened together so I turned up a ball nose punch from some 1mm steel rod and carefully riveted the parts back together on my staking block.
At least for now it seems to be holding up.
So there you have it. I plan to make a better tool for putting this back together.
