2913-4 opinions

Hi!

I've been looking at this 2913-4, possibly as a rolling restoration if I could get it for the right price and I'd be interested in opinions.

I know that it's a bit beaten up - case polished, back completely overpolished and some dial patina and missing lume. The dial looks the right age for the case and movement (although you can't see the movement ref in the pics, the s/n is consistent with a -4). I'm not sure on the hands, were they still fitting broad arrow hands that late? I think the crown is a later replacement and the bezel refinished? Crystal may be service, but it is genuine Omega. Is the case too far gone? I have a terrible eye for case profiles.

Thanks - here are a few pics

If you are concerned about polished cases, it might not be for you. The dial appears correct with the clear damage. Generally, the -4 would have the arrow min. hand, not the hour arrow. But it was near the transition, so I'm always reluctant to say ALWAYS in those situations. Those who do think the changes were done at precise points love black and white....but the changes were more gray.

No one can offer a rational opinion without knowing what the "right price" is.

Thanks, I'm not particularly bothered about a polished case on a tool watch. It's going to have lived a bit over the years.

Fair point. It's up for £3.5k currently.

When you say restoration what do you mean exactly? Personally, I don't find it particularly attractive even at £3.5k, the case front is very tired, the case back looks awful, the bezel is neither this nor that, a later crown and a bubbling dial...I do like the hands, but yeah, even I wouldn't start a restoration project from a hand set 😁

In this case I'd rather buy a 'lesser' reference in better condition.

Thanks, that's useful input. I much prefer a 2913 to a 14755 or 165.014 but I take the point. And I'd aim for less than the asking.

I don't mean a full restoration - I've got a trilogy Seamaster if I want the aesthetics but a spotless watch. I mean a sympathetic re-lume, get the case tidied up (laser welding if required). I'd change the dial if one came up, but that's unlikely. I don't find the dial unattractive though, albeit it reminds me of a Tudor Sub. The worst bit is the caseback to be honest and it's not like a Rolex where they aren't difficult to find, it would need to be really specific and I doubt the current one could be made to look right.

Mostly though I'd want to be able to wear it without worrying too much.

I just bought my only 2913 a month ago, and I passed over many 14755s for less money. I also wanted a 2913....even though they look very much alike, 2913 is 2913. I also wanted a daily driver...and got one. The bezel on this one appears to be touched up with maybe black paint. RCDesign here can set you up for a good price and not a year of waiting. At 3500 the price is in the ballpark. The blistering on the dial would be a problem for me. If you like it as it is, this might be a good watch for you.
