·Hi all,
This Speedmaster 105.002-62 is up for auction on eBay in the UK, ending tomorrow: https://ebay.io/m/ckq3KA
It has plenty of attention on there but does not appear to have a thread on here yet. I came across this one late and unfortunately don’t have the capacity to go deep on research this weekend; it seems a difficult piece to assess and value, so I thought I would offer this one to the esteemed members of this community who are more knowledgeable on these early Speedmaster references.
The bid is up to £4,586 at time of writing with a day to go. Full disclosure: while I’m of course interested in the watch, head over heart, the bid is already beyond my means, so this thread is mostly academic for me, but hopefully is helpful for any other prospective bidders, or anyone curious about the reference.
I’ve read Speedmaster 101’s excellent blog post on the reference and understand these can be a minefield of different configurations. 19.5m serial appears correct, case has seen some polish but looks nice enough apart from a big dent to the bezel around 10 o’clock. The description appears fairly transparent and honest, but that doesn’t mean it is necessarily accurate. It notes the hands have been relumed and the crystal is incorrect, but those would be fairly minor gripes for me.
Any major red flags here in the details of the dial, bezel, caseback etc. DON bezel may not be original but looks pretty good to me. If the hands have been relumed I would suspect the dial has as well, but it’s not unattractive.
Assuming it’s an honest, original watch my final question is how big of a can of worms is a Cal. 321 with a nonfunctional chronograph? A potential money pit I would assume?
