Hi all,

I hate to be 'that guy' and pop up with an eBay link after some advice ... but I'm going to be!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18675375...-a007-baf98024954f|iid:1|vlpname:vlp_homepage

I've been doing my own research on what to look for in vintage Omegas, mostly from this forum, but it's led me to some specific queries about this one that I thought I'd ask on here.

- Im guessing off the bat this one will loose 'vintage cred' for the new strap, but should that affect the value of it?

- I can't work out if this is a redial. I'm thinking it probably is because of how clean it is, but there seem to be so many variations for this model it's hard to tell what an original one should look like. In particular, the marker at the 12 position seems to change a lot, the sub dial always seems different (sometimes it's not there at all with just the hands over a cross) and the 'swiss made' text seem to not be on some of them, so I've barely seen two alike.

- The serial number suggests it was made in 1956, but I've seen MK2 versions dated 1955. Was it normal at that point for an older model to still be produced when a new one is out?

- If this is a redial I'm still tempted by it as a something to wear rather than invest in - but what should the price be? The only other one I've found for sale is/was on Chrono24 and it's half the price but in way worse condition.

- Does this model have an actual name? I only ever see it referred to as a 2800-1?

As a more general question, as a semi-regular wearer, how will a 70 year old movement perform?!

Many thanks in advance!

This forum prefers photos rather than links, so that threads can serve as a future reference. The watch looks ok at first glance. If you expect to wear it regularly, plan on paying for a full movement service.

Apologies - Forums usually don't like pics as it fills up the server! I've put some of the key ones below;

  • IMO the strap does not affect the value of a watch at all. Just change it to whatever you like.
  • I don't think that is a redial at all, it looks good but the minute hand lost its lume.
  • The movement 266 is correct for this model and it looks good, all the teeth are there and not worn. It should keep good time (+/- around 5s per day) after having a properly service.

Follow up question now it's here - I can hear it ticking away when it's on my wrist. It's a quick tick as the second hand is sweeping around, rather than the normal tick from a quartz watch.

Some things online suggest an Omega making noise indicates its fake, other things suggest this a myth.

With a model like this, should I be worried?

It's not fake, mechanical watches make a ticking noise. Some are very loud, some you need to listen carefully. I think what the internet means to say is that the sweep hand generally moves more smoothly than a quartz watch, although it's not totally smooth if you slow down a video. Your movement beats 5 times a second, IIRC. Note, there are some rare mechanical movements that do move the sweep hand once a second.

it should ticks 5 times/second. It’s a mechanical watch, not a quartz watch. As long as you rewind it every morning, it should keep running. Nothing abnormal here

I reckon it's about 3 times a second it's ticking .

It's very nice either way! I'm used to wearing big 42 - 44mm things so quite like having something a bit lighter!

The beat rate of your call 266 is 5 per second (2.5 Hz), or 18,000 bph.

I'm counting the ticks but not the tocks!
