I don’t know if anyone else was following this auction that ended this weekend. Over $20k ($20,877.77) usd is pretty high for this, what am I missing?

It has a nice DON, but a wrong and weird dial to my eyes. Dial is a pre professional but the lume doesn’t come high enough on the step, the dots at 12:00 are on the step, like flat out on the step; half on the low half in the high.

Service crown and pushers.
1039 but only one endlink
Drop end chrono

It had multiple bidders so a weird shill system, if it was, and I don’t think any shill would have tried to push it that high?

Am I missing something that made it desired? Crazy bidders? Strange shill strategy? What do you think?

THE SPEEDMASTER LIMITED EDITION 42 MM "ULTRAMAN" ... OMEGA's 1967/68 “Moonwatch” has been a hit with collectors ever since it appeared. Some out there at 25.000$ USD and even more
Main factor is it is a Limited version. Big issue for a serious collector.

There are many others on eBay for around $9K, while I don't follow the Speedmaster market closely, doesn't make much sense to me either

I know… and the seller had no history. Some guy named Buzz Aldrin with no prior sales.

It has a grey dial.
So you think someone gambled that it is a Matte Grey dial? Huh, that could be, but man I hope they got better pictures than that.

10 or so of those ID’d and they were on 105.003 if I am not mistaken. But from the couple pics I have seen they have that shorter lume and the half/half 12:00 dots…. so maybe?

Good eye, thanks.

It's definitely a grey dial. You can tell by the proportions of the step vs the placement of the chronograph scale. There are also telltale signs of wear on the step, which is a hallmark of these soileil dials. Someone got a steal, IMO.

I think you have a good eye too @140dave as you spotted the tells without knowing what it's telling

Thanks! That’s why I asked, that is why I am here. Still learning everyday.

Not a heartbreaker for me, I don’t have the extra 20k laying around. I was outbid early on this one, only willing to gamble parts value of what I knew was correct. Now I know.

Thanks, I saw it but came to the wrong conclusions. I thought someone had transplanted an earlier dial that had been relumed. I may have been half right on the non original dial (to the watch) but it wasn’t a relume I was seeing obviously.

Lume looked short on the step, I didn’t ID that the lume was normal but the step was set differently. That should have been the red flag and it was for at least 2 people as it was a 2 person bidding game at the end.

If the winner is part of OF I hope to see it again. And I’ll take my Thank You for not asking the questions while the auction was live. 😉 lol
