Hey all,

After year of enjoying the Omega Seamster, I decided last week to buy the new version. I found it very hard to find side by side pics online, so i decided to post some for who might be interested.

I like the new ceramic bezel, the cleaner dial, the longer hands, the black calendar background, but can anyone tell me why Omega decided to change the clasp?

The new one looks very nice and sleek. But I love the wavy dial on the older one! Shame they got rid of that.

The newer bracelet feels more solid IMO so they updated a little. Still overall great. Looking good.

I've always loved this watch; was a must have up until I purchased one. Once I saw the update, I pulled the trigger. The bracelet is as comfortable as can be, and solid. Glad they switched to screws, versus the pins, as it makes sizing easier. And the new bracelet simply feels sturdier. I prefer the 'Omega' on the clasp vs. 'Omega Seamaster Professional' It's cleaner. The bezel is perfect. The hands are both, too short, and too long, still. The helium escape valve is still useless for most of us, but I can get beyond it. Would rather the older Omega symbol, compared to the newer 'He' I get it, but it's not my favorite. And the dial... yah, no waves, but I love it. That deep blue lacquer they went is far better than the waves. I know many disagree, but that blue/black is bottomless. I know many will disagree, and I understand, but I think this new dial is wonderful improvement. The older version just simply looks tired next to the new one. It's still a stunning piece, but newer is better in this instance.
I own the blue iteration also, and I cannot get bored staring at it. The black is always black, but the way the blue changes shades... which, I would love to observe with the waved dial (maybe one day). I don't wear it as an everyday watch (I cycle mine) but it's a treat when it's on my wrist. Great work on the side by sides. All said and done, both have their merits.

Fantastic thread! I've gone from wanting blue to black and back again and never quite being able to make my mind up (my 'blue' dial has always been planned as the Bremont U2 blue). Trouble is, I'm still none the wiser and before reading this, had settled for the black. Maybe I should get both!

I'm holding out....
I invested quite a bit of time and effort putting a bug in the ear of the men in charge.., and I wasn't alone...
Many of us lamented the loss of the wave dial

Something tells me that we will see the SMP with ceramic wave dial and 8500 movement at Basel '15

I hope not. I cherish my wave dial SMP too much; wouldn't want it devalued by fresh competition.

i used to own the omega 2221.80 (quartz) and recently sold it and bought a 2220.80 ( coaxial 2500 auto). I personally prefer the deep blue wave dial compared to the new ceramic model. However, I can see how the ceramic bezel is an upgrade though.

It would be interesting to see a side by side weight comparison. The case back, bezel, and bracelet links all look considerably thicker.

Sorry can't deliver on that. I sold the old one the next day 😀

I'd take the old style, blue dial.

I've owned the 2531.80, and both the blue AND black versions of the SMPc (three times each

The 2531.80 has a great look once the markers start to patina...but that is all it has on the SMPc.

You could choose the older SMP versions for some of the unique features:
- 2254 for the dial and amazing sword hands
- 2531 or 2220 for the wave dial

The SMPc is better in every way:
- ceramic bezel, not the fragile aluminum
- bracelet with screw-type links
- movement (unless it's a comparison to the 2220.80 then it's a wash)
- lacquer dial is a work of art.
- blue SMPc coloring that changes (blue is my preference)
- black SMPc is a classy edition that competes with ANY black ceramic diver

It comes down to personal preference, but the SMPc is by far a superior watch to any previous SMP.

I've got an older one of these on the way to me. I'm on pins and needles waiting for it to arrive. Beautiful timepieces.

I would add the modified ETA movement, the Omega 1120 movement under the hood on these older SMPs as another worthy feature, it has a reputation on being accurate, reliable and simpler to maintain.

Personally...I think the best combo is an SMPc and a 2254.

Here is what I'm wearing today, my 2254 on Rover Haven Arts & Crafts leather.

Nice comparison! I currently have the new ceramic blue:

also had the black 50th anniversary too, but sold it to buy a Speedmaster 40th anniversary. Here blue and 50th black side by side:

I also love the old wavy models and owned a few models in the past (mid size auto and quartz, full size 2220, 2535, 2054, 2264, 2234, 2232 & 2221). I will probably either buy a 2254 and keep my blue ceramic or trade my blue ceramic towards a regular black ceramic and buy a 2531. 😉
