20/18 alligator strap for moonwatch question

So there's always the question of whether a strap "IS used on" a watch, and whether it "CAN BE used on" a watch

Exactly - that's the issue with people posting information that isn't correct. There are two ways to know if a particular strap or bracelet will work on a particular watch:

1 - Omega used it on the watch originally
2 - Someone has bought one and physically tried it.

This is a case of #2, rather than #1. The OP in this thread was asking specifically if the strap he was looking at was made "for" the Speedmaster because he had concerns that it fit just perfectly. That is why I corrected the notion that the strap originally quote was for the Speedmaster Pro, because it isn't.

While the packaging might not match what comes directly from Omega in many ways it's actually nicer. The pic by @JVK_watches looks to be heat-sealed thick gauge vacuum packaging, while the Omega packaging for straps is usually just a very thin and narrow plastic sleeve with flimsy adhesive keeping it closed.

The issue with the packaging is that it's not original Omega packaging, leading to questions of authenticity, and it's also potentially misleading in how it's labelled for "Speedmaster" and Omega straps are never labelled this way.

BTW the strap package posted above looks no different in terms of the plastic and "quality" than what Omega sends them in so thin plastic with adhesive on the fold over as you describe. The packaging you say is heavy heat sealed plastic is from the buckle - that is original Omega packaging.

I asked in an AD about the leather & deployant combo. I can't recall the part number but she told me the OEM leather for a Speedmaster is 20/16, not 20/18.

That's not correct. It's 20/18 for the 31133423001002 watch posted above by alam.

Apologies, reading that back I see I wasn't clear. I meant to say the enquiry I made was ref a Moonwatch, Speedy Pro, not the OP's watch. Am I correct in thinking that I can in fact use a 20/18 as long as I get the correct clasp?
Thanks,

J

You're quite right, only had the bottom of the second image open and didn't see that it was for the clasp packaging which matches original Omega packaging for that part.

But the OP didn't state that whether they have the Sapphire Sandwich model or the 31133423001001 which is the hesalite model and comes with the 20/16 strap. Maybe Omega pairs the traditional-style strap and clasp with the original hesalite, and the more modern-style set with the latest Sapphire Sandwich. Really wished they also had an option like this for the modern bracelet.

And while all your points are correct and you later expounded on your correct response by replying to later points, sometimes it helps to add that commentary to the original correction. As always, the truth is often more confusing than the error.

While you are correct, since every minute I spend on here is a minute away from my bench where I make my living, I sometimes don't always have time to write the same things I've written over and over again, yet another time...

Thanks,

Okay as you know this comes on a bracelet, and no strap is listed. So what I do is look up the case for the watch, and then use the case to search for straps that are known to be used by Omega with that specific case. Doing that gives me:

Strap - 98000008

Buckle - 94521613

Cheers, Al

That's very kind, thank you. At the moment I have the OEM NATO, the huge Velcro "NASA" strap & the bracelet. Currently I'm using an SPV1 from GasGasBones which looks awesome. In the New Year I hope to add the leather strap/deployant pairing for when I want to appear suave & stylish (it'll take more than that I fear).
Thanks again,

J
