1991 Speedmaster Questions

Hi everyone,

I've been hunting for an older Speedmaster, either a 145.022 from the 70s or one from my birth year. I happened upon this one on eBay that has box and papers and it dates to my birth year and month!

I asked the seller for movement shots and serial number. For 1991, let me know if I have the following facts straight:

  • 145.022 reference number is still being made
  • serial number should only be found on movement, not on lugs
  • Long S and R is appropriate for a 1991 dial
  • Tachymetre should have no serif on the 7, DNN, and no accent on the E.

A couple of things about this particular listing that I noticed:
  • The bracelet looks older to me than what would have come on a Speedy of the early 90s. maybe a 1171? I asked for a shot of the number on the clasp. Waiting to hear back.
  • The caseback looks like it's in better shape than the rest of the watch (maybe I'm wrong), maybe it's a service part. I'm not opposed to some service parts, but would not want to pull the trigger on a complete frankenwatch.

Let me know what you think about this listing, and if you would go for it if you were looking for a birth year Speedy. Thank you so much!

Pictures are preferred over links, links disappear over time and pictures remain. Many members will not open a link. You will get better response with pictures.

I’m afraid I can’t answer your question directly, but I can share a few points that might be helpful.

Please note that the dates written on the instructions and warranty indicate the date of sale, not the date of manufacture.
From the information on these documents, it appears that this piece was sold in Japan. In Japan, dates are written in the YY MM DD format.
Therefore, this one was sold on March 8, 1991, not August 3, 1991.

This website may also serve as a useful reference.
You can search by birth date to identify a range of serial numbers.
If the serial number is known, the site can also be used to verify the manufacturing date.
However, due to recent changes in the Speedmaster101 price list, the "Poor" column has been removed, and as a result, the prices listed on ilovemyspeedmaster may not be entirely accurate.
Thanks so much for this response. I appreciate it. Good catch on the date!

Anyone else know anything? The seller is saying it appears to be factory sealed - see the red wax on back of case. Is there any other way I can authenticate this besides opening it up? Thank you - I appreciate any insight.
