Speedmaster Vintage questions

Hello everyone,

My father gifted me his Omega Speedmaster, which he rarely used. The watch seems to work perfectly. I have attached some photos below. I have a couple of questions:

  1. I would like to know what year this watch was made. As you can see, the case back has “1450022” engraved, and the serial number is 48333042.
  2. What is the reference number of the bracelet that originally came with this watch? Which bracelet would you recommend buying?

Thank you!

Giuseppe

Nice watch, Giuseppe!

The bracelet this Speedmaster probably started its life with is a 1479 / 812. These aren’t super difficult to find, but not very cheap either.

There is a pretty good reproduction on the market as well; https://unclestraps.com/products/us1479-omega-speedmaster-bracelet-20mm

Thank you so much!
Would you recommend polishing the watch? I think I’m looking on the market for an old 1479 bracelet

According to the Speedmaster bracelet table - for the 1450022 it was either 1175 with 640 endpieces or later 1171/633. These are fairly easy to find.

So why not the 1479? I have this table

The people here would recommend never polishing. Cleaning, yes, but not polishing the case. Retaining the case lines is more important to a collector, than any little scratches.

Nice watch! Hope you wear it in good health.

With an 80’s watch it depends on the case. I’d always prefer not to polish and yours looks like it might have a decent case but your photos don’t confirm, we’d need more pics including from the side. Of the case is already poorly polished, a good refinish could improve matters but I don’t expect that to be the case here.
Instead, polish the crystal with polywatch and give it a clean with toothpicks, wet wipes etc. that should improve it dramatically.

Thanks David! Which bracelet do you recommend for this watch. This should come with the 1479, right?

Exactly this, some of the most expensive ones are among my least favourites too, I'd actually start with a Forstner or Uncle Seiko, see how you like it and go from there with what suits you best.

Polishing the watch will almost certainly devalue it a bit, and this is considered heresy among serious collectors. So if you plan on selling I would not.
However, if this is to be a regular wearer for you, and you prefer the polished "like new" look, go for it. I would also recommend wearing it as is for a while before deciding. You can always get it polished, but you can't unpolish it 😀

I found this bracelet for my Speedmaster (1479/812). https://www.chrono24.it/omega/speedmaster--id40668251.htm?searchHash=c9e0c017_wFwF9e&pos=1

It appears to be in good condition. What do you think? Do you see any red flags? The seller would give it to me for a final price of €1,000, including shipping.

No big problem with that one, but I suspect you can buy one for less on eBay without much difficulty. Also, IMHO the condition of the bracelet should match that of the case.
