kGQuQwn6 Not sure the best place to post this (I previously did so on Facebook, so forgive me for the repost).

I have the opportunity to purchase a birthyear (1984) Speedy for around $4500 (Pic below). I have not been searching for one, nor has the idea every particularly appealed to me, never been opposed - just not something I have pursued. However, I came across this particular example locally for what seems like a very fair price and am considering acquiring it. I have a modest collection (36mm explorer I and the Speedy being the only "luxury" watches) and at this time don't really wish to hold onto 2 of the same watch, so picking up the 84 would mean letting the 3570.50 go.

Removing any sentimentality, is it a bad idea to step back to the more vintage model. Obviously, not moving into a super collectible 321 or anything like that, is there anything "better" about a mid 80's as compared to the 2011? FWIW, the 84 has been serviced recently and mine has not. It's not a daily wear, but something that is worn several times per week. Help me think through this.

ETA: I do rather enjoy the speedy lume, so thats a drawback - albeit a small one

For me the main thing is patina. If you have nice patinated lume plots and hands (which I can not say after this one picture you showed) it has this vintage look. Personally I love it. And I love that there are different shades of colours of yellow, orange, somtimes not wanted ones like like green-ish, or lack of material - white. I love the idea that something changed with time and it can get even more beauty to the watch. If you don't care about it and you don't look for a birth year watch, and as you said you like luminova look (it's what I understood) I would stay with 3570.70.

I recently acquired my birth year Speedy (from 1981) and to me it has way more character than my Speedmasters from 1992 and 2020...

If you were born in 1984 go for the new ones..You will have time to get old and to go for the old ones.. 😀

Hello,
Your 3570.50 was bought new? If yes, I prefer to keep the 2011.
I bought my 3570.50 new from OD in 2011 because a very special event for me. I'll try to keep always with me.
If your 3570.50 was pre-owned, maybe to get a birthday year Speedmaster is a good idea.
Kind regards,

I have a 3570 Speedmaster I bought new. It was my first "proper" watch and was the reason I ultimately sold my 3861 and stuck with the 3570. It has sentimental value for me and I knew I'd regret letting it go. I'd apply the same logic here for you.

I bought an 1861 new and subsequently purchased a 3590.50

To be honest I preferred the 3590.50 however the 1861 was more sentimental. Ended up keeping modern and selling the new vintage.

It's hard to beat sentimentality. Especially if you purchased new as you'll never be able to get the watch back.

If you can, have both
