So I purchased this seiko at a great price from a client, and at the time cosmetically it appeared to be in rough shape. But the watch had good bones. After slapping on a new waffle diver strap, and polishing the original crystal, it looks amazing.

I'm wondering if this is a watch I can use as a beater, or would it be better to sell it to a collector who would appreciate this a bit more than I would, as I was never really into Seikos. I'm looking for something I can use in the water, play sports with, and use in the gym.

What are your thoughts and opinions on this?

 

I bought a new version of it to use as a beater, and I am not a seiko fan eather, just like to have something robust for the summer time while I am at the beach.I would say vindage should go to collector, but it is really up to you.

Well that watch appears to have an original crown (early 70s 6 grooves per section), but it's pretty valuable to Seiko collectors - definitely well north of $500 would be my guess. Since you aren't really into it for what it is, I would be more tempted to sell it, and either get a modern Turtle if you like the cushion case, or just the 7S26 which is an awesome beater. Obviously if you want vintage, then maybe one of the more common reference like an early '80s 6309.

Honestly for a beater sell that nice vintage piece and get the new turtle or an skx. A seiko collector will pick up yours fast. No worries with water resistance or an old movement.

 

I've been eyeing the SKX, it's nice i like it, but was wondering if there is any other automatic out there under 1K USD that I could use as a beater.

Any ideas?

For some reason the Mako's don't speak to me. Would prefer an SKX over a Mako, but that's just me.

 

I think my favorite under $1k for divers would be the Turtle on the low end and the Shogun on the high end:

 

The Mako is one of the earliest autos I bought. And I can't stand it today. Beautiful blue on the dial, but that's literally the only thing going for it.

 

Anyone have any other ideas other thank Seikos or Orients?

 

Zodiac Oceanaire maybe?I know it is not the same Zodiac as it used to be, but I have one of those, screw down crown,200 m, date, rotating bezel and simple design.

Oddly enough, my client whom I purchased this Seiko from, wears the Zodiac Oceanaire lol

 

Hamilton has some great non divers under 1k. Some great flight and military style stuff.

 

And if you wanted something more unique, there are literally hundreds of microbrand divers out there that can be had for less that 5 bills. Watches like an Armida A1 or A7 are less than $400 and offer a lot for their price:

Has anyone ever had any hands on experiences with Helson divers?

 

I haven't personally, but lots of people over in the WUS diver and affordable forums like them.

 

How did you polish the crystal??? Is it acrylic or mineral glass?

Great looking one for sure, should bring $700+ as these are hot right now.

I echo the modern Seiko beater, great watches for thexample money.
