I have the opportunity to buy, from my local AD, either or both, the 1861/1863 at a 17% discount or, pay full retail for the latest and greatest 3861/3863 models, from my local OB. As I do intend to buy one of each, what would you do? Your comments are most appreciated, especially from owners of these watches. Thanks!

If you're getting both a hesalite & a sapphire watch. I'd say get the hesalite 1861 and the sapphire 3863. That way you're getting a "real" moon watch, and you're also getting a model with an applied logo, exhibition case back, etc.

It’s pretty much what I was thinking . The only thing is I do like the non-polished, brushed bracelet on the 3861

Btw unlike previous generations of speedmaster, this generation uses the same 3861 movement for both hesalite and sapphire ones.

I think they still have two versions of the movement. The chronograph brake is metal in the visible movement. And it's also decorated. No point in decorating a movement that the owner never sees.

@balmung0 is correct, there is no cal. 3863, hesalite and sapphire have same movement 3861.

I read a few articles and they all mention that both the new hesalite and sapphire versions are using the same movement, with the same level of finish.

By "intend to own 1 of each", do you mean 1 hesalite and 1 sapphire? Or 1 of a 186x Speedy, and 1 of a 3863 Speedy?

If the former, I'd recommend starting with a Hesalite 3861. After a year or two, we'll eventually see display casebacks for it become available. Whether after-market ones like how Thomas Preik produces for the current-generation 3861. Or find ways to get your hands on an Omega OEM sapphire caseback, to install onto the Hesalite.

The majority of future-release limited edition Speedmasters will likely have sapphire. So I'd just wait until an Apollo 15, 16 or 17 50th anniversary LE to get a 3861 with a sapphire crystal.

As your planning on buying both a 1861/1863 and a 3861 speedie, a 17% discount on the outgoing movement is a no brainier.

You will initially own, from new the older speedie. This gives you time to save for the 3861 and I suspect after the hype. You may then also able to get the new one with a slight discount too as you will have a history with your AD, win/win.

Personally, if I was in your situation I'd get a hesalite 1861 and a sapphire 3861.

Nice choice to have! I agree with the majority: get the older version with hesalite and the new one with sapphire.

AD is now at 20% discount on 1861 and 1863 so I think I'll take one of each!!! Also, is willing to give a small discount once new ones arrive

Heck of a deal. I’d go with that too. How much of a discount is he offering on the new one?

20% is good discount but don't see rationale of getting a 1861 and 1863 version, they are essentially the same movement with same case, same dial, same bracelet. Buy the old Hesalte and new Sapphire, best of both worlds. Don't let the discount sway you.

More importantly, where are you based to get 20% discount?!
