More importantly, where are you based to get 20% discount?!

SoCal.......the land of wildfires, earthquakes, riots and chaos.....a onetime paradise, turned into a shithole!!!

Heck of a deal. I’d go with that too. How much of a discount is he offering on the new one?
a small one........didn't give me specifics on it......yet!!

AD laughed when I asked about discounting 1861,“they’re not making these anymore, so no (very arrogantly)”. I honestly don’t understand how some of these stores stay in business... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Been lurking here but first post.

I had exactly the same conundrum as OP. I was offered 15% off the 1861 or the 3861 at retail.

In the UK that was £3,545 for the 1861 or £5,370 for the 3861.

Went with the 1861 and as soon as it arrived knew I'd made the right decision. The difference in price didn't justify the improvements for me. I'm sure the new movement is quality but the 1861 has been around long enough that it's a solid movement.

The new bracelet was what almost swung it for me, I'm not a fan of the 1861 bracelet (6.5 inch wrists) so I went for it on leather. Luckily Uncle Seiko is bringing out his version of a 1450 bracelet in about a month's time. I'll immediately get that as I both prefer the look and also it doesnt have the big endlink which is what makes it look too big on my wrist.

Overall worked out really well, delighted!

I would get the 3861 for the bracelet alone! Sure, you can change up the bracelet on the old one, but I like to keep everything OEM. And you're not able to get a precise fit of the new bracelet on the older gen speedy.

Personally, for me, when I am spending a few thousand on a watch, I always want the latest model and brand new.

That's just how I operate, it gives me peace of mind and I don't have "what if..." thoughts anymore either.

Congrats -- sounds like you made the right call for you. The 3861s look good, but the improvements and changes they offer don't make the previous-gen Speedies any less desirable on their merits, IMO.

Also been lurking here for a while, and thinking of taking the speedie plunge. Can I ask where was offering that discount? Heard lots of places not willing to discount now it’s discontinued.

As your planning on buying both a 1861/1863 and a 3861 speedie, a 17% discount on the outgoing movement is a no brainier.

You will initially own, from new the older speedie. This gives you time to save for the 3861 and I suspect after the hype. You may then also able to get the new one with a slight discount too as you will have a history with your AD, win/win.

Personally, if I was in your situation I'd get a hesalite 1861 and a sapphire 3861.

I agree entirely with Capt Cave Man. Buy one at a time starting with the 1861 hesalite. Within 6 months, if you are willing to pay full retail, you should have no problem getting a 3861, but as time passes, a new 1861 from an AD will become harder to get.

Sound advice......picked up the 1861 at a 20% discount.........my AD will start to receive the new 3861s by the end of the month. I can either get a small discount, when they arrive, or wait, as this will be a regular production model for years, and get a much larger discount.

Congratulations on your new piece!

I expect when things settle down most ADs that are able to offer a slight discount will continue to do so on the 3861.

I'd love to be in your position to purchase both but a Snoopy is my priority and will deplete the funds.

Same boat, although the Snoopy should provide much of the 3861 feature set, I guess.

Decided to go with a Hesalite 1861. Couldn’t resist the discount and as a first time Speedy purchase I couldn’t justify the price difference for 3861.

I'm surprised dealers are discounting the 1861 at up to 20% off, would seem they would hold their appeal and price level as the supply dwindles down.

I emailed around all the big UK jewelers that had it in stock and most offered me some kind of discount. All of them are offering a free watch winder with the watch (ironic as it is manual wind), so I just emailed saying "I don't want the winder, can you do better on price". Worth giving it a go for anywhere you can find them in stock still.

This picture changed my opinion:

I would go now for a 1861 with discount + Forstner /Uncle Seiko bracelet.
