I will add photos of mine as well (use every opportunity to show your watches 😁).

This shows the bevels of the lugs on an unpolished case pretty well. From 1993.

I like the GMT because you can swap the insert depending on how you feel.

I have the 114060 too and I prefer its more 'indestructible' feel than the 1675. However it does sit bigger on the wrist.
There are good photos on this thread showing the original lug finish, so maybe those can help in finding a good condition 5 digit GMT.
But I just wanted to add that the advantage of getting the GMT over the sub is the insert stuff.

Unfortunately I think I'm heading towards the same conclusion. I'm starting to think I'd like a 114060 for daily hammer, playing with and looking after the baby, then a 16710 to add to the collection.

The good thing about 114060 is if you buy new (just like all moderns) you get to leave your own mark on it. Since you mentioned this was a potentially commemorative piece, it might be a good idea.

And the ceramic bezel also means, no worries on the insert at all. Which is usually a concern with older 4-digits.

The glidelock bracelet was also quite a shocker for me, such a comfortable and convenient bracelet to use. I think the 114060 has all the merits that come with a modern watch, while staying true to its roots (no date!!!)

All true and this is what drew me to a 6 digit ref initially.

I've never had the Rolex bug, but after trying several on over the last few weeks, the charm of the classic case is starting to call to me!

Yep! Hence why I went also over to the 4-digit world 😁

If possible, try to see if you can try on a 114060, it does sit bigger than the 5 or 4 digits. I have a bony wrist, but the bracelet was still able to accomodate for me. Such a nice bracelet.

Once you start going to 5 or 4 digits, I think more research is required, not just on ascertaining originality but also just simply on what you want.

Obviously having both would be ideal, but I guess if I had to choose I'd buy the 114060 first, because 1) it may suit your needs more (I'm assuming you have a more predominantly vintage collection with the speedys) and 2) IMO it is easier to move out a 114060 if needed. (Just my experience).

Saw this one the other day listed for $9,500. Looks like a beautiful piece but a bit more modern with the lume and no holes. Looks unpolished possibly?

I made the mistake of searching for 16710 on C24 😲 Sweet lord there are thousands (as well as 1000s of ‘verified dealers’...by the looks of it there are more dealers in the world than collectors)...and quite a price spread too...

I would not buy from C24 or ebay, plenty of reputable dealers around with good quality watches who ship to EU.

That Pepsi pic listed above is Fogcity Vintage in CA, great seller to deal with. I purchased my A serial 16520 from him. As for the GMT you are looking at $11k for a full set late lug hole/SEL combo is fair market value as other have stated. Nothing wrong with a light polish if done correctly & the black bezel gmt appears in very good shape to me. If you can get it closer to the $10k mark even better !

Also check the clasp code if it’s engraved a date code of DE/DT/AD, either one of those corresponding letters would be correct for that 2003 watch. And take a look at the Rolex Cert paper if it specifies the SEL oyster bracelet code listed right next to the reff number 16710 (it should read 30B7879).
