166.020 and 552 not compatible ?

Hello everyone,

After purchasing my first seamaster 565 166.020 I wanted to build one without the calendar. I also wanted to have a side hustle.

On eBay I saw some 166.020 cases with a 552 assembled, so I bought a 552 movement with the dial already attached, a 166.020 case and some pairs of case clamps (1911s, 1911) thinking that i could create a watch.

Unfortunately my 552+dial don't fit. The case clamps are not going under the blocking system of the case. I try 4 different case clamps compatible with this movement and case without success.

I was wondering if the one i have is a different kind of dial that could be thicker/larger which is the problem ? Here is the picture of the dial attached to the 552 and the case 166.020

I don't really like the 165.002 (original case of the 552) but I think I have no choice...

Thank for your help, I'm new to this forum but I've been lurking for years on your posts !

Although the 552 is compatible with the 166.020 case, it’s also compatible/correct for a large range of other cases. Unfortunately dials aren’t generally as interchangeable as movements so you likely need a seamaster deville dial. Another Seamaster or Geneve dial like you have likely won’t fit.

Thank you for your reply, that confirms what I was thinking, so now i have to find a deville dial or buy a 165.002 case to old the 552 and the Geneve dial.

Do you know if there are different sizes for the seamaster geneve dial ? I don't want to be in the same situation after I buy the 165.002

Thanks

Dials are the bane of the frankenmiester. I come from an era thirty years ago where repainted dials were the norm. So such do not bother me too much as long as such are decent. To that end I set up a fiber laser to cut some dial blanks. The results were promising but I quckly lost interest. Given that such things are only for personal use. Placeholders on the off chance something decent will turn up.

Cases, dials and bezels are sort of a complete unit. Best to get them as a set, otherwise it is a money pit as you found out. I have quite a few housless movements. The cheap under 50 buck cases one finds on the bay never fit anything common.

Does remain a weakness though. Just last night I saw a 2247 case going for around 20 bucks. I did a half hearted bid, which to my surprise won the auction. Now I need a 26.5 T3 movement or equivalent. To make matters worse, there is no dial. So another odd case for the collection.

Perhaps it is possible to flip things on the low end. Probably quite a few folk out there who attempt such things. The supply has dwindled quite a bit in the last year. Demand seems to also be on the down side as the people looking to buy are also interested in flipping.

This is the problem. 166.002’s came with both plain, Seamaster, Geneve and Seamaster Geneves dials so my guess would be that a 165.002 case would likely fit. However, there may be other references with the same dial as Omega tended to experiment during this period so could could be back where you are now.

TLDR: likely to be a 165.002 but not certain.
