The reference 167.070 Seamaster Calibre 551 Chronometer is quite an unusual piece, and one surrounded in a fair degree of confusion and controversy over the years, added to by an origin story that's difficult to source or confirm. [..]

Incidentally while I didn’t include it in the article who got it, there was a really nice one recently that sold on eBay for under $900 to @dmtowl and it came up really well after he cleaned it up, beautiful watch.

"beautiful watch."

Fully agreed with you Ash, quite the sample of Omega's very colorful vintage heritage!
Thank you for the insightful read and reminder of why we are all here I suppose 😀
Here it is, still subtly star-bursting 👍

Thanks mate without your thread from 9 years ago triggering several discussions among the owners it would have been a lot harder to put everything together. Yours was sort of the point where they seemed to be clearly a legitimate reference and the story you quoted made a decent amount of sense, would be cool if we did get some confirmation from Omega at some point or if an extract is ever published with 167.070 saying Seamaster instead of 165.070 and Geneve.

That's now been added under the dial section, @Melhadary had a good photo of the back of his example

Thanks to this story, I was confident in buying this one today from a Japanese eBay seller I've previously dealt with. The 25% discount made it very comfortably in the "what to not overpay" range, and I'm comfortable with the mild patina. More pics when on my wrist:

Nice one! Look forward to seeing it, the low value of the yen really has made buying from Japan quite interesting recently.
