145.022s - Subtleties and Oddeties

Being lucky enough to have some hours to while away in the watch cave, I get time to compare.

For me, comparisons stimulate my eyes to see more than if I was looking at a watch in isolation.

Also, it's fun to see just how much information can be taken from just one head-on shot.

Here are two 145.022's. The left is a -76 and the right is a late -69.

Both of these are in my opinion attractive to buy, if I were to see them on the market. However, there is much to observe on both, and I thought it would be fun to see what everyone sees. I'll come back and tell you my observations in a while.

Period correct bracelets on both would be nice. The hands on the '76 also look like superluminova service replacements to me.

Ultraboy is rocking the 220 bezel. '76 has an incorrect pusher and the case has been polished a bit more than collector like to see...

Beat me to the polishing and the 220 bezel here but I missed the pusher
I prefer the 69, I’m a sucker for some orange. The dial has a warmer patina for me.
I’d go as far to say the 69 looks more honest and lived in, less polishing and more dinks

-76 Crowns seem to be different height more flush to case
-76 Dial seems to be to bright for 't swiss made t' (for being only 7 year)
6 and 9 subdial font not as slim or crisp on the -76
-76 Same can be said for the logo, speedmaster and professional
-76 Hour, Minute, second and chrono hands(large and small) hurt my eyes,
-76 Dial, at the second markers there possible lip its vary faint, the lip is further in and more pronounced on -69
-76 Subdial division markers end at 'crease' whilst -69 extend onto the flat
-76 Subdial possibly vary faint concentric circles compared with -69's are much more pronounced
-69- for no other reason to say out loud
-69 is an ultraracing boy

Is it just me or is it due to case polishing that I see that the -76 lugs seem different in shape to the -69? If I may say so, the crisp lines on the 69 lugs (especially towards the tip) are more 'curvy' that what I see on the 76. Known case difference or am I imagining it?

Is it just me or does the dial look refinished on the '76 (or rather swapped out and is a service dial)? Seems very bright for its age.

Depending upon when the service was done, a service dial on a ‘76 would probably have superluminova lume and would have “SWISS MADE” and not “T SWISS MADE T” on the bottom of the dial which indicates tritium. The hands on this ‘76 have clearly been replaced with superluminova service hands. Note how white they are compared to the tritium hour indices on the dial. I think that’s probably the original dial or it was swapped out for another tritium dial, but it's not bright enough for superluminova IMO.

The -76 dial is 100% correct. It was a dial only found on -74 and most -76. Lume etc is a different question.

The 3 from 30 on the 3 o'clock subdial is slightly different too... the stroke looks to be in a different place:

Bottom pusher cap is coming off on the -76. Otherwise it looks similar to my -76, but this one is earlier. My "S" is the long S that only came into use part way through 1977 - around June are the first examples that I am aware of.

It seems to have the same issue mine does - replacement hands. Oddly with mine only the hour and minute hands are superluminova, the chrono hand is tritium, but you can't tell unless hitting it with a blacklight.

Then what would you call a 145.006 SM with black radial hands and orange chrono? Ultra-Panther, after the comic books character?😎

So an update

Simon Freese just returned the -76 and told me two things.
First the dial is one of the cleanest he has seen, and that to my surprise the hands are tritium - a UV test proved that. It is just they are in very clean condition - as is the whole watch.
