Tropical dial is nice especially if the rest of the watch is in great original shape. While I have one speedmaster which will benefit from having this type of dial, still prefer the dial to be as close to original in condition as possible.

If a 145.012 cost 21k$, as good as the condition can be, my 105.012 cost 40k$?

I am in the camp who would not pay one cent extra for a manufacturing error or color fading

wow! that's the real thing to buy a moonwatch for the july 69 anniversary.

Almost "the real thing"😀
Wouldn't "The real thing" for the July 69 anniversary be an Omega Speedmaster Professional 105.012-65, In the 24xxxxxx range, like Neil Armstrong's?

I have mine on the table next to me. SM101 has this reference listed at $13000. I would be interested to know what difference you think the brown dial might make to the value... any ideas chaps?

So to be clear, you ask as this watch here:

Sold for $21,000, you ask if this watch:
704199-69c98049f71076b461625664d8aa232e.jpg

Is worth $40,000 ?

Not to me.

But always an interesting exercise to compare watches.

I now wish I had bought that 145.012 I think it is one of the best I have seen

I bought my first vintage omega in 2008 and one of my first purchases was a 145.012 that I got locally when I knew very little about speedmasters. The seller wanted $2000 for the watch which included the original flatlink bracelet. I thought that was too much money so the seller threw in a full service done by someone local we both knew. So I caved and said ok. Well looking back it was in pretty good shape and a great deal. And threads like this remind me that finding these later cal. 321 speedmasters in good condition is not easy.

Here is that watch which I now use with a navy blue leather strap to give it a different look.

I love it. Wearing it now. Have it on a 1039 now but still need a nice pair of original 516s. When the sun shines the thing is just breathtaking

Interesting question. Some thoughts from SP101 : http://speedmaster101.com/blog/brown-dials/

For me personally attractive brown dials deserve a premium - all else being equal - and the max premium I would consider is the amount it takes to get to the next higher value watch, i.e. "good" 105.003 for 17K, or 4K premium max for me. In other words, my question would be : "For the same price, should I buy a SP101 "good" 105.012 with attractive brown dial, or a SP101 "good" Ed White ? Nice problem to have I realize.
