131.019SP Crystal?

Hi all-

I've mentioned in previous threads my attempts at my Omega 601 with the busted dial foot/glued on dial. I finally got to taking it apart today (and it actually started running, low amplitude, but encouragingly!) and have many of the replacement parts already. However, the one I am unable to source is the crystal. It seems to be the kind that comes with the bezel ring attached. However, mine looks like it was replaced with a non-OEM at one point so is very clearly not the right one, and doesn't fit in the tension ring anymore.

IS there a good place to find a replacement for something like this (in a silver finish)? Or at least: figure out something compatible?

I assume you mean the inner tension ring?

I think the Omega part is pn1048 but obviously only available from someone with an Omega parts account. There will be a sternkreutz generic alternative if you know the dimensions.

I don't THINK I mean an inner tension ring? It was in a bezel of some sort (just 'clicked in'), but part of the crystal is missing so it didn't fit in well. When searching, it looked like I found one similar. That said, PN1048 seems like a good lead, thank you!

Dimensions I'm so-so on. The existing crystal is not quite round, but is ~29.8mm diameter, perhaps a little larger. About 4mm thick. Perhaps I'll look into one of those too. Thanks!

So the external bezel that holds the crystal onto the case, similar to a seamaster deville?

I admit I don’t know for sure, but the bezels are generally a separate part to the crystal. If you’re needing one it will likely be very hard to find. Even Omega May no longer have it (perhaps Al can confirm the above).

It may be easiest as a hobbyist watchmaker to try and find a donor case from a wqtxh with a bad dial

The crystal seems to fit in a cutout on the top of the bezel thing. So I assumed it was a 1 piece thing.

That case is tempting, different reference (not SP), but maybe worth it anyway and using my case back...

This is more of a fun project (in other news 240 amplitude on first assembly with part wind after a non runner that kicked up to 140 when I was pulling it apart!), so not sure how much it's worth putting into it.

Fun so far, a three hander for my first time in a LONG time, but the Omega movement quality is crazy vs the Seiko I've been playing with (and even better than the ETA and AS movements!).

I also found PN1048 (062PN1048 to be exact) as the original crystal for this reference. The diameter and height seem to be 31.1mm and 2.9mm. Cousins shows this as a non-armored crystal, so it shouldn’t have a tension ring.

Woah. That's way bigger than what came out! Unless I measured way wrong it's sub 30mm diameter.

OH! That's interesting. Im confused now then. It was clearly a ~29.8mm part that I took off, that was 'pressed' into a bezel of some sort... so I'm very confused now!

That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s sold as a one piece unit.
The outer steel bezel fits snugly into a notch on the seamaster deville crystal. They are put together first then installed on the watch effectively as a single piece but the crystal and bezel are both sold separately

I can see that as a possibility, just an assumption I made. Also just a little confused by the dimensions that @rendo found too though. I've got a pretty consistent 29.8mm, and the inside of the ring (where it looks like the crystal should go) is at max 30.7mm. SHOULD it be a 0.4mm press fit? I guess I could order a few and see 😀

Guessing the previous watch maker made some additional odd substitutions 😀

I found a 31.1mm acrylic watch crystal on ebay pretty cheap which will hopefully be good enough to see if it will work. I suspect it'll be 'too high', but if it works and annoys me, I can come up with something different. I'll keep you all updated!

062PN1048 is the correct crystal. It is 31.1 diameter and 2.9 tall.

As noted the crystal is a press fit (otherwise it would not seal), and is installed into the bezel and bot are pressed in place together.

You wouldn't be able to tell me if there is a movement ring, or the dial diameter too, would you?

I'm trying to case the movement, but I'm finding that when trying to put the movement in place, the dial lets it go 'too deep' into the case, to the point the dial is below the stem. There doesn't seem to be anywhere for the case clamps to 'hold onto' either.

I guess a 30.5mm dial (it came with a 29.5mm dial, and my replacement is as well) could potentially be 'clamped' by the bezel, then the clamps could push it 'away' from the case back against the bezel? BUT every 601 dial on ebay seems to be a 29.5mm, so that makes it seem like I've just screwed something up, or am missing something.

Here is a photo of hte movement 'front loaded' (pardon my fingers, I'm back and forth between the computer trying to figure this thing out), and how far down it goes. This ALSO has the case clamps out. The ONLY place I can catch the case clamps(and barely) is on a ridge that woudl stop it from dropping all the way through.

TBH, I might just be way past 'good money after bad' on this watch 😀

I'm missing the 'top' ridge! It looks like the case clamps should sit in that ridge in that other movement.

The plot thickens 😁 I've done a 'make an offer' on that ebay listing, It is a way nicer case than mine ANYWAY (even if it IS quite a bit polished), and as I said, already way past "good money after bad" 😀

No movement ring that I can see listed, and the dials I see for this case are 29.5 mm.

Alright, thanks! I think this just means there is something wacky going on with this case then. Otherwise there is no way that this movement and this case can go together. I DO know some watchmaker in the past had their way with this (glued on dial, broken foot, missing screws, etc), so looks like I'm just spending MORE money on this foolish thing 😀

Though, with the new case, I might actually have this good enough to wear. So I guess its just money 😀

Decided to play a bit with my new-old camera (D3200) and just got this guy finished up! The new mid-case worked perfectly and the replacement dial looks good! I love the new crown (the old one was super tarnished) and think it goes great! 34mm case is a touch on the small side, and it isn't really my style, but this is my first 'Omega' watchmaking success!

The new case is lovely, it is in great shape. and the rest of it looks nice. The hands didn't clean up as much as I wish they did, but otherwise, its a great looking watch 😀 I'll have to find a friend with a naked wrist to wear it!

WELP, I spoke too soon. I WAS able with some finagling to get the crystal inserted, though it had a bit of a 'creak' as the watch was touched.

A few minutes of playing with it and it managed to break all the way around! I just couldn't get the non-high-dome ones to work either, and my two crystal lifts are basically impossible to compress it enough to get it in. So the 31.1 seems to be a bit too big 😁

The one that came off/was loose when I got it, measures at 30mm even, so I'm tempted to just pick up a $15 crystal on ebay at 30.5mm. WDYT?
