·There is a large gasket between the glass and the case that "breathes", meaning that as much water pressure increases the case is compressed, increasing the water resistance. Thus the name Respirator. This is only for dials without the X. Dials marked with X do not have this feature. Hope I am explaining it correctly.

Yes, that's it in a nutshell. The introduction of some different case shapes made it difficult to duplicate the pressure seal feature for all of them, but Zenith carried the model name over anyway for use on pretty much all of their square (or rectangular) watches.
