Hi OFers,

This one's from eBay, listed as Buy It Now for $695 (no offers), which feels a bit ambitious to me, but at the very least I might learn a thing or two from you, if you're willing to weigh in. As ever, I appreciate gaining insight from your experience.

It's advertised as completely original---a single-owner estate watch. It looks to me as though it has to have been polished or refurbed somehow, but nothing in the listing says so. (It does include directions about setting, which is nice: "**** Important Note***** This watch cannot be time set in the conventional way -it's time setting function that makes it highly collectible. In normal setting mode, only the hour and date can be adjusted. In order to set the MINUTES & seconds Push the center of the crown with a slim pointed item ( I used a ball point pen nib) Wait for the seconds hand to stop completely (approx 5 seconds) quickly release the center of the crown and push in again immediately and hold- The minutes hand will spin - release when the correct time has been achieved****")

Again, not sure I'm totally interested, especially at that price, but am interested enough to want to get feedback. Still think I might hold out for a stainless '77...

One thing I do note is what appears to me a blemish on the dial at 7 o'clock, though it's not evident in all the pics (I don't think) so could just be an artifact of one photo.

There's definitely some kind of bullshit, I also noticed, in the "reflection" picture, unless it somehow took 10 sections for the reflection to show up. 😀 But maybe that's just artistic license.

“Its time setting function makes it highly collectible”. That’s BS right there - it’s just the rather esoteric way that all of these Omega Quartzes (including mine) work. It’s a very ambitious price and I think seller is hoping the Omega name will bring in a good price. The fact is that these are not that highly prized by collectors.

Regarding your specific point about the marks around 7 - the black stuff looks like dirt on the dial (very hard to deal with unless it’s loose) and maybe a smudge on the crystal? Hard to tell. I suspect it’s been polished, but the dial looks pretty clean. For me, it’s not the most attractive watch, and certainly not for that price.

Your instincts are right - forget this one and move on. Keep looking out for that stainless steel automatic - it’ll be there one day.

RUN AWAY

Because...? Again, looking to learn as I go here. If you've got some specific insight, I'd love to hear it. Not that you owe it to me, naturally, but I'd welcome it.

Cheers for this. Yeah, the setting thing was a bit of a question mark for me: sounded like silly salesmanship. And logic would suggest that if there's any kind of dirt on the dial, then it must have been opened up at some point, no? The story of it being an untampered-with piece starts to get dubious.

I'll take your suggestion and hold out. There are plenty of '77 stainless watches out there right now, but they're mostly abroad (I'm in the US) and I'm looking to buy domestic right now. Like you say, it'll come.

This would be a daily wearer/birth-year watch for me, so I'm less concerned about collectibility than I am about finding one that's totally legit and priced reasonably. (I wasn't born in a highly collectible year, alas. 😀 )

I think that the price is way too high.
