Well, I may have a line on one of the 30 1969 Commemorative Solid Gold Speedmaster watches. And it is for sale. I have no more info right now, but just to see it would be a fantastic thing! No idea of price. I was so thrown back at the time, I did not even ask. All paper work with the watch, but I was not told and did not ask, what number it was. More info Monday.
So it's one of the Govt./Nasa Special caseback watches? wow. From chronomaddox. 18k Gold Speedmaster Professional (Post-Moon) NASA/Govt Edition: Shortly after the sucessful moon landing by Apollo 11, Omega created a limited edition of 1,014 solid Gold Speedmaster Professionals with a gold dial and gold case back. 39 of these watches had a special back ( pictured at right) which were presented to the President, Vice President and Astronauts engraved with their name on the back. I am WAY out of my comfort zone with this and just putting my toe in. I will have pics as soon as I can and of course advice is VERY welcome.
A cool part of this story is that NASA offered Nixon a watch and his group declined it. not this watch, but one of the 30
Bit less. the bezel is maroon, and the original one is DON and irreplaceable. a new maroon one is available, for £1000, but it is a modern font. @HWB are you being offered one of the sub 39 watches? how cool
Not that far to drive. I hired a car and drove from Zurich to Lugano the other day to pick up a speedy.
Good excuse for a road trip. Nice autumn day (spring if you're south of the equator), pocket full of plastic and your favourite bike. What more can you ask?
A mere hop, skip, and a jump! The outbound leg may seem to take forever, because of the anticipation. The return will go by in a flash with that beauty on your wrist!
It does make a trip into an adventure. So far I have flown to Denver and rode my ST1300 back to FL Drove from FL to Penn and back without stopping to pick up my CB1000. Rode to Savannah to pick up my Speedmaster and again to pick up my 14k Seamaster. Rode to SC to pick up my Prestige. And last, a ride to Mobile to pick up a Seamaster. But, I did not have the weight of all that paper then............
