Here is a silver one for reference- no plating on it. May have come that way, although I have seen the silver plated. The A11 cases were recycled for the early ORD watches with a different back

Hmmm, that has less color than mine. Mine's probably brass then. Maybe I don't know what color brass to expect. Sounds like the silver used was an alloy, and brass is itself an alloy, so I imagine the range of shades these metals appear in is broad.
Would one of those "we buy gold" places be able to test it for me?
Regardless, I'm thrilled to have this piece whatever metal it is. I'm a WWII buff and both of my grandfathers were in the fight, so this one is special.

I think the term base metal is very loose especially considering the era it was built. Issued watches were made to last through the war not a lifetime.
