WW2 Era Watch with Interesting Inscription

As a result of my random watch searches I recently won an auction for a WW2 era watch that has an interesting name on the back. Firstly, I have NO idea when it comes to watches of this vintage as to what is correct, what is a good movement, dial condition etc. This one looks to have at least had a replacement crystal and crown. Dial is appealing to me. I just wanted a small watch of that era as I haven't had one that old before.

Anyways, moving on to the inscription. Looks to me that is says Steven Melnikoff. After a quick google, I can only find one older guy by that name and he is still alive by the looks of it. Do you reckon its the same fella? Not a common combination of first and last name I would have thought. The rough engraving has corrosion in it so doesn't look like a recent addition. I don't have it in my hands yet but it looks like there is a number there too. Possible army service number?

I wonder if there a way to reach out to see if its his old watch?

Neat story. I’d reach out to the writers at a fox Entertainment, Martha MacCallum and Kerry J. Byrne, and ask if they’d confirm with him

Yes, I might give that a go if I can find a contact email. Tested my theory of a serial number by searching his name on the National Archives website just now and it lines up! Now to see if he remembers it if I can get in contact.

yes another candidate. Found a few references stating the 105 year old Steven grew up in Rhode Island which is more likely a Boston enlistment.

Was able to contact him through a guy at The Greatest Generations Foundation who is in contact with him. Steve said it certainly looks like a watch he use to have. Good enough for me. Makes me wonder if it went ashore at Omaha Beach with him.
