Worthy of being my first vintage Omega?

Hi Luke. Welcome to OF. The Omega Enthusiast is a reputable dealer of vintage watches. You can be assured that the watch is authentic, that the dial is not refinished, and that the movement has been recently and properly serviced. That being said, the site’s pricing is VERY high relative to market with most offerings selling at twice what they are worth. Here, for example, is a dial variation of the same reference that sold here on the private watch sales forum about two years ago for $599 USD:

If value for price paid is important to you, you would be better off finding a vintage Omega for sale from a member here on the private watch sales forum.

Great advice and I am facing the same dilemma. Go for an overpriced example from a reputable store knowing that its genuine or be patient, do your research and buy from ebay/member (risking that you may have missed something)

What reputable store could you possibly find where you would know with certainty that everything is legit. There is no such source IMO. There are many OF members whose opinions I would trust more than the Omega Enthusiast's and some of them occasionally sell nice watches. In your place, I would take some time to learn the landscape.

That’s a fair point, Dan, but I think that there is a general consensus among OF members concerning dealers with good reputations versus dealers to avoid like the plague. I’ve never heard of anyone who complained about getting a poor or misrepresented example from the Omega Enthusiast, but all one need do is peruse the site for a few minutes to conclude that the watches are very expensive relative to market.

Thanks for the advice, is there an area on the forum where I could possibly place a request for anyone selling a particular model/reference?

In the meantime I best get researching....

Yes, there is a “Wanted To Buy” sub forum on OF where you can post. Be careful with any replies you receive, however, as WTB posts tend to attract scammers who just happen to have exactly what you are looking for. If the would be seller is a brand new member to OF with very few posts and wants to do the deal outside of OF, usually through a third party, that’s a dead giveaway.

You will need 200 substantive posts before you can create a WTB listing. But if you see something for sale that you like before then, you can send the seller a PM.

Luke awesome watch but I agree with some of thoughts posted thus far, if you can wait for your first and have the time to spend on this forum you will most certainly find your watch. And the added benefit is you'll learn a lot so you won't have to rely 100% on the seller to evaluate a particular watch. Good luck!

Just keep in mind that most things you find on this forum for $600 (and the same is true for eBay) will likely need a service. You can certainly find a similar watch for significantly less than $2000 but expect to pay $300 plus on a service. Depending on what’s going on with a movement you could pay two or three times that.

If you like that watch, I’d recommend reaching out and seeing if he’s flexible at all on price. You never know unless you ask. Does he offer a warranty on the service? I scrolled through quickly but didn’t see it jump out at me.

If you really like the watch and you have the means, why not.
High price but authentic running right and in great shape, I can see.
Can you do your due diligence and find one at some point for a better price? Sure.
But I agree with the gentleman above, if you are new at this and aren't looking to put this into a pretty fat collection, look around and see what's out there.
Apparently with the dealer above you are paying for peace of mind. Plus a premium.
Good luck in your search.

I agree that most OF members are more educated than the stores. However, the store will generally let you see the watch before you buy and will be a reference point to return if required. They also carry liability insurance. Granted you pay for this service, but if you are not a collector and want a genuine nice watch, and can afford it, then buy from a store/dealer. I am not an Omega collector and nor do I want to be, so the thrill of endless research does not appeal to me. I just want a nice watch to be proud of

It sounds like a retail store is a good option for you. so don't let me stop you. Please post photos of your acquisition. 👍

I forgot that watch ownership was a competition of who knows more or who can make a newbie look like a dick. I thought that we were here to help each other and share in a passion for nice watches. I apologise

Weird comment after I wished you well in acquiring a watch from a retail store. 👎

There's no sarcasm on the internet, get over yourself. All people do is try to help you avoid mistakes in your previous threads, and you turn around and make obnoxious accusations. I'm out.

Eh, no sarcasm on the internet? Recommending a store bought watch to a newbie, on an enthusiast forum, priding itself on knowledge sounds sarcastic. Sorry I read it wrong
