Winding and Power Reserve

Hi,

The Speedmaster is the first manual wind watch I have had for many, many years. I am taking the approach of winding while it is still clicking with wach wind, and stopping when it stops clicking and kind of springs back (like it's bumped into a pillow). Take it that is correct?

How many winds does it usually take from stopped? I read somewhere it was high (around 90-100) but I am not seeing anywhere near that. Also, what kind of power reserve do you all see in real use?

Thanks

Those Lemania based chronographs should have 50+ hours of reserve. Wind it until it stops completely. Unless you're King Kong or your mainspring is about to fail you won't break it.

Mine winding about 100 turns and have about 58 hours power reserve.
Of course what consider 1 turn will slightly different from person to person, hence variation of the turning number,

Wind it every day until it stops winding. You will feel when it can't be wound anymore. Omega specs call for 48 hours of reserve, but they often go quite a lot more than that.

Cheers, Al

In all seriousness now....I have two 861's and they both have a reserve of about 51 hours each after a full wind. I tend to have long drawn out turns so a full wind from zero is about 31-33 turns. I wind them once in the morning and it's usually it's about 15-16 turns for me.

Thanks all. I gave it a full wind at 6pm. Well, I wound it till it started to bounce back. I'll leave it to see how long it lasts. Hopefully 'till about now on Friday!

If its a new one it will bounce back a few times before its fully wound. After a few weeks you will encounter less bounce back when winding. Wind until you feel the stop. You will know.

OK, thanks. It bounced, and I tried again; it still bounced. We'll see if that was a full wind. It's still going strong at the moment, 19hrs and 13 mins in.

Seems to run approx 6 seconds fast a day. Pretty happy with that for a non-COSC watch that is unadjusted and just how it came straight out of the box.

👍

Am really bonding well with this watch!

As TLIGuy says

Wind past the bounce for the first few weeks. I stopped at the wind back (bounce) at first and found it wasn't lasting that long and was stopping until i searched on here and the net.

It won't just be a 'bounce', it will be a dead stop. The bounce is the mainspring trying to unwind as tension builds but being stopped by a click locking in between two of the winding gear's teeth after the spring pushes backwards just a hair. Full wind is when you can't twist anymore and feel like you need to use pliers. (Don't use pliers 😉 )

Well, it's now gone beyond 48 hours and is still happily ticking away. I guess I gave it a full wind!

It stopped on 52 hours and 6 minutes. That's not too shabby at all! Means I can get it through the weekend on one wind (I plan for this to be my weekend watch).

😀
