Will the Mitsukoshi dial work with 3861?

Hello all,

I have been into watches for 5 years but I am new to Omega.

I have successfully aquired a Mitsukoshi Service dial because I want a Panda dial chrono.

I know the dial works with Caliber 861, 1861, and 1863.

I would much prefer to obtain a brand new SMP and swap the dials.

However, I need to confirm and know with certainty that the dial is compatible with Caliber 3861 in the new models before I can purchase.

I have asked two certified and experienced watch repair experts, two watch salespeople (whom I would have purchased a new $5,600 -$6,600 SMP from) and one forum member.

None have been able to help me.

I have also spent hours researching the forum and found one person previously asked the question, but no answers.

The 3861 was released Jan 5, 2021, more than 4 years ago.

There has to be someone on the forum who knows, or who can point me in the right direction. I'm not afraid to do the work.

Many thanks in advance for your knowledge and experience.

Doug

Here are two modded 3861 Speedmasters

You can view those photos with context at this link,

The answer is yes, but it won’t necessarily look good as you can clearly see the dials edge in both of those mods.

I don't know much about the 3861 models, but are both of those examples the sapphire crystal versions (e.g. from the polished links)? Possibly a mod could see better results if it has the hesalite with black tension ring to blend out some of the edge?

The bottom line is the dial was made for the 1861 and will fit the 1861 and 1863 the way it should, but will not fit the 3861 the way it should.

Finding a good 1861/3 to mod should not be that difficult and will, frankly, be a much better choice in the long run as it is easier to get these movements serviced through an independent watchmaker than getting the coaxials serviced is right now. Omega may not be willing to touch a dialswap if you need service in the future.

The second one is clearly a sapphire model as you can see the “milky ring”. Given the 11k price tag associated with the first one, and the polished/brushed bracelet, it’s reasonable to assume it is also the sapphire version. A black tension ring will only mask the issue and make it harder to see at a glance, but it will still be there. IMHO, this mod doesn’t look great as the parts aren’t entirely compatible. They may “fit” but they don’t fit well together.

We have a few members that have a 3861 with a mitsu on here. I’m sure they will chime in, I think it looks amazing

@Scarecrow Boat

REALLY...

I spend hours researching this and you have the correct answer in 9 minutes....

Thank you!

Watch nerds are the best.....

The best at helping me spend my money...😀

OK

As Deadpool says, Let's pro/con this.

3861:

Pro: Great new metal bracelet. Hacking. Much greater timekeeping accuracy.

Con: $5,600 new. More expensive service. And that horrible, stupid gap. Thank Omega....

1861/1863:

Con: No Hacking and poorer accuracy. But I will have to wind every day or two so just set to nearest minute at that time. I can live with that. Will be my first manual wind watch.

Poorer metal bracelet. But I already have other watches on metal. Plus I am planning to start with an Alligator Bund strap OG Paul Newman style, then switch to other leather as necessary. I can live with that.

I have never had a used watch before. Will have some other guys germs and skin on it. But I am not a Howard Hughes germaphobe and I can have my dude clean it when I do the dial swap...😀 I can live with that.

Pro:

Much cheaper independent service. That might be hard, but I can probably get used to it.

Price: very good to excellent 2019-2020 model: $3,500-4,000? Is that correct? I could live with that.

A mind-bogglingly beautiful Panda dial with no stupid gap that I will love the rest of my life.

I can live with that!

Thanks all forum members for your assistance.

I hope this helps someone else...

The most inexpensive 1861 watch to mod is the 3594.50. You'd also need a bezel and hands if you don't want a steel bezel and broad arrow hands. But it's a good candidate for a mod.

Thank you!

I did NOT know that.

I need a new handset anyway.

My first impression is that I may actually LIKE the steel bezel because it evokes the OG Daytona Pandas.

Thanks again!

I know the 57 Speedmaster actually came first and the Daytona was the copy.

Sorry I misspoke.

I'm a noob.

Thanks again!

This.

I was just about to post something along those lines. Last year I was looking for a donor for a mod project (Speedmaster with a Mk II Racing Dial). At the time, there were several 3594.50s on eBay for under $3k. With some good timing — a 10% off coupon from eBay — I ended up with a pretty nice example for about $2,700 including tax and shipping.

You’re still on the hook to track down a bezel and handset, but you can probably recoup a few bucks by selling the steel bezel and broad arrow hands.

Also worth knowing: the 3861 bracelet fits the 1861/3 cases, and can be purchased from Omega boutiques. Could look for a "head only" if you don't want the older bracelet/want to save a bit on the watch purchase price and order the bracelet you want. It's probably around 800-900USD new though so be aware.

I just saw one from Japan for $2,800 but plus tax. I would like better than that.

What about on our forum?

How is availability of 1861s both the 3594.50 up to newer ones from 2019-2020?

Thanks all!

You can always keep an eye out on the sales forum for a used one. For a modded watch I would go for an 1861 model, mod it with the new dial and handset. If you want the newer 3861 bracelet just buy it from an OB or AD.

This is exactly what I did. Well worth it
