Why would my screw down crown do this?

About 2 threads of the crown tube protrude from the case of my chrono with L5100 movement. When I push the crown in to screw it down, before I turn it at all it's pretty much already touching the case. Then it will only screw about 1/4 turn before it stops and is locked. I'm guessing the first threads in this crown are stripped. Does anyone have a more informed opinion?

I would say that's likely the problem - both the case tube and crown are replaced as a set when this happens typically...

I was afraid of that. This is a Lorenz Chrono Sub so I don't think either of those parts are available. Especially the crown.
