Why do you buy vintage?

Because it´s part of the history of the development of watches.
They were pioneers with the technology available at that time. Totally different from today´s environment.
Today they all look very similar.

Best regards.

I absolutely get the thrill of the hunt, but it come down to what Al mentioned - because the watch speaks to me! Of course if it's not in production and I love it, I would go for it vintage or not.

Generally speaking I'm more of a brand new kinda guy. If I can afford it of course (i.e. Pepsi) 😀

I know this is not the best of reasons, but it's a factor. If you buy a new car the minute you drive it off the lot, it depreciates. However if you're careful when you buy a "used" vintage timepiece, it most often appreciates. Not to mention the smile these vintage watches put on your face when you put them on your wrist 😀

I buy vintage straight lug speedmasters coz the look great. The history that every piece has had before also makes it more interesting.

Why do you buy vintage?

I cannot explain it.

Either you get it or you don't.

Yep. Agree with most sentiments. Now, let's see the percentage of vintages I own.... it's about 50 percent!

For me I also like for want of a better word the vibe you get from wearing a vintage wrist watch every time you look down at it and how accessible they are from a buget point of view and like ARCHER I buy what I like and what appeals to me ...

Talking about accessibility... this one new would cost you 4700 USD. Got it for quite a bit less. Blows me away every time.

Because:
a)"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life."
b)"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

Sadly not my quotes. They belong to the once great and late George Best. But they still resonate well to this day😀 I like vintage watches and life is just too short to admire them from the sidelines.

I'm a historian, I buy them primarily for the history - my Connie pie pan is part of the historic 100,000 consecutive certified chronometers. Other reasons are the value for money - including a complete overhaul I have spent a tiny sum of money on the watch (compared to a new Globemaster pie pan in steel, the most equivalent contemporary model), and I could easily profit if I was to put it up for sale here or eBay. The final reason is rarity and uniqueness. I am yet to see anyone else wearing a vintage pie pan Connie outside of a specialist vintage watch shop, and I expect it'll be some time before I see somebody else with an original black dial.

A high quality, well crafted item, that served its intended purpose, and was well cared for through is life has a lot more character than ones fresh off the shelf.

I am more inclined towards wabi-sabi than raw flawlessness.

When I bought mine they were not considered vintage. Second-hand/used I think they were. Oh how times have changed..... However, I did impulse buy a flightmaster last year. Why? They just don't make anything with such 70's cool!!!!!

Less than new? Not fishing in those waters I'm afraid. I love interesting new watches, I love interesting vintage watches. They are works of art, craft and beautiful. They fit into a small place unlike cars, oriental rugs and folk art which are also amazing. I only have two bays in my garage and live in a winter city, only so much floor and wall space, but lots of room for watches.

I think you nailed it for me. But there's also something to be had about fresh off the shelf pieces that we care for throughout life and develop the watches character over the years. Makes it more intimate!

I liked old ones originally because I wanted a watch with no lume, because I'm ocd about owning things that have a fixed lifespan.I'm really weird like that but it has led to such a wonderful passion I feel so gratefull!

I like the idea of owning a high precision hand made mechanical watch with a history 😀. They don't make them like they used to anymore...

I like the things I would have liked to own when I was young but couldn't afford. I like vintage and antique items generally for their history and craftsmanship. I have the collecting bug. It's a perfect storm and no use fighting it. Luckily Mrs E is very kind and indulges my affliction. It's better than drugs, alcoholism, womanising, gambling and other less mentionable pursuits, as I never tire of reminding her.

I just love the old stuff, these watches are so much more beautiful and show more history and 'soul' than the modern stuff.

At least in the last years they managed to put more 'soul' into the new designs, but the old ones are unmatches!
