Why do pin buckle spring bars typically have flanges?

If the buckle has pierced holes, which many do, what is the point of flanges on the spring bar which end up on the inside of the buckle if you can simply remove it by depressing the bar through the hole on the outside of the buckle?

I assume they’re generic, used for various buckles and not all buckles have holes on the side

this is a replaced pinbar. Those buckles don't have flanges normaly
Not clear on what you’re saying. What flanges on the buckle are you referring to?

Similar to the stubby tipped ones that are in the clap so they don’t protrude out the sides which fly across the room when you are trying to resize, then you end up using one of these generics that always peek out of the clasp holes to mock you daily
