Introduced in 2013 as a Speedmaster Professional Racing, but we soon found out it wasn’t a “Racing”, at all. Omega told us the red and white checkered minute track was a reference to the rocket of Tintin’s “Explorers on the Moon”. Here on Fratello, the watch was immediately dubbed Speedmaster Tintin. You all know the […] Visit Why Did My Omega Speedmaster Tintin Increase 431% In Value? to read the full article.
This is a classic case of FOMO. It went from unloved and sold at Costco to being one of the hottest watches on the market. I’m happy for those who own and enjoy the Tintin.
Maybe coz you picked it up for nothing in Japan?! My only question is why did it increase in value 250% about 3 months after I sold mine
I remember seeing them back in the day. I thought they were unattractive then and I still feel that way. The red and white banner is distracting and makes the dial harder to read. How are these LEs less than Tintins (for example)?
@Robert-Jan : I did enjoy the video, as I do all your content. But, I don’t feel like I got the answer to this question:
It's quite tiresome to read threads focusing on value, especially from experienced collectors. This type of thing just feeds the hype. Obviously I am not tempted to click on the link. To the newbies out there ... buy it if you love it and try not to think about watches as investments.
Why did the Patek Philippe Nautilus go from an unloved dog that no one liked or wanted into a $100k+ 'gotta have' watch? Insiders pushed and prodded and made the watch desirable. Then you have a hoard with the FOMO burned into their brains. None of these things happen in a vacuum. Always follow the money.
No kidding. If someone offered me $12k USD for my daily wearer Tintin I would have a hard time saying no. It might put one of those 2998-3s within reach.
I picked one up several years ago for 2 reasons: it looked interesting, and the story behind it was unique. I've paid a lot more for watches with less interesting back stories, and unlike limited editions with intentional scarcity (if Omega LEs qualify as such), this was a regular production watch...I guess I viewed it like an "error", a "misprint", or an "inverted Jenny" of sorts, which IMO carries much more uniqueness & intrigue than an intentionally produced LE celebrating some anniversary or using precious metal...a failed collaboration, yet partially salvaged with an interesting story after the fact, but it's unfortunately caught up in the craze of the watch market. It's not my favorite watch or even my favorite speedmaster, but it's fun to wear.
I bought mine to compliment my 3750.40 Japanese LE edition. I personally love the dial, it’s unique, fun and colorful. When I bought mine, they were plentiful and could be had in the low 3’s. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the price appreciation which doesn’t seem justified or rational. But heck, we are living in unusual times and price inflation is abundant around us.
