Why can’t I install the seconds hand?

Like the title says… it’s an omega 1022 caliber. If I try to push the hand through the pinion that goes on (in the middle of the hour and minute hands) that same pinion goes down as well (and up again when I stop pushing).

Did I made myself clear?

Thank you in Adam e for all the help you can provide

Would need to see what is (or is not) supporting the other end of the seconds pinion on the watchmaker side of the movement.

Need some hickory. Nothing like a good piece of hickory.

I'll Archer explain further but you will need to gain access to the back side of the second hand post and brace it. Poorly worded but at you try to push the hand on the post, the entire post will push down not allowing you to properly install the hand.

If you are unsure how to safely perform this, you should take it to a watchmaker. The counterweight will need to be removed.

I understood exactly what you meant and I was able to finally do it. Is this normal/good practice, though?

Remove the automatic winding system, and use a movement hold that will support the sweep seconds pinion.
