Why are there different manual movements in the new Dark Side lineup?

As the title says, we got a few cool Dark side watches out. There are quite the variety of movements along the line, with an automatic movement and 2 different manuals.

I really like the Gray Side caseback, showing off the modified 3861.

So I am a little confused why Omega picked a different manual movement for the "Dark Vader?" It seems like it's more a "detuned" 9900.

From what I can tell, the “Dark Vader” isn’t using a random or lower-spec manual, it’s using cal. 9908 - basically the hand-wound member of the 9900 family that Omega already uses in the Chronoscope.

The Grey Side, on the other hand, uses cal. 3869, which is derived from the Moonwatch’s 3861 and then skeletonized and laser-ablated to look like the lunar surface --> makes a lot of sense for the Apollo-8 / “moon is essentially grey” storytelling and for the 3-subdial layout.


So I don’t think the 9908 is a “detuned” 9900 - it’s more like Omega deliberately split the manuals: 3869 for the heritage / lunar piece, and 9908 for the modern, bi-compax Dark Vader that still feels related to the automatic 9900 models.
