Why are handbags so cheap? Or watch straps so expensive?

I’m thankful the wife doesn’t have to order a new custom shoulder strap with every new purse. Can you imagine them needing strap collections for those?

Wait until Panerai start making handbags, the collectors will spend $8k on the bag and just as much on 50 different types of custom peeled animal strap to put on it.

I have a few seal leather open ended straps that I picked up from local estate sales. God knows if I could get them now, and what their price would be...

This is my Seiko 5717 sitting on a $5USD (probably faux) leather NATO:

And my UG Polerouter on a $100 (apparently, it came off another watch) ostrich band:

It really all depends on perception and price.

As for that Coach/LV argument, I'd say people who believe they can't afford it would buy whichever and then suffer debt for some time...

Went searching the internet about this one, this is what turned up; "Those with a poor mathematical education or reasoning capacity recognize 'less' is the antonym of 'more' but, not that it is only correctly used when applied to addition that is, "I have 3 less," can be equivalently stated as, "you have 3 more." To express this another way, the inverse operation of addition is subtraction, whereas for multiplication it’s division. It's sloppy and incorrect however, it is found in common usage."

Turns out you are right, and I have poor mathematical education and/or reasoning capacity

Might as well add "people who point out this to others, are annoying little twits who should find something better to do with their time" 😁

As others have already said, I think the cost of the hide plays a large factor (if you ignore brand cachet, etc.). I've went leather hide hunting with my wife for some small projects she's worked on (not watch related), and you will definitely pay for quality hides. Now imagine cutting just a few straps from one of those several hundred dollar hides... Almost no room for error, and this is before you even start stitching.

My wife collects handbags and I don't feel like the Louis Vuitton purse I got her for our 10th was cheap...not in the least. I could have got a new watch for close to the same price.

On a side note most Hermes special edition bags increase in value at a rate of about 15-20% a year...I wish I could get that return on my investments!

Total handbag noob here. Is that 15-20% price increase year to year from the dealer, or on used pieces or new old stock/ bnib??

Will there be a woman strong enough to lift a purse the size of what Panerai would make? 😁 😜

I honestly don't know. My assumption is that these numbers only apply to limited editions like the Kelly or the Birkin so it would be just whatever was paid for it. There are many articles about the investment value of Hermes but none compare used/new values and ROI and they all have the same theme: While these bags do continue to rise in value every hear, even while other investments, like gold, continue to drop it does not make them a solid investment. Everyone remember Coach Bags right? At one time they were considered high end luxury and now they are found in every factory outlet mall in America.

It's also my assumption that you can't get these bags just because you want one. Like Patek special editions they generally remain in the hands of unappreciative celebrities and the very wealthy and given as gifts (or bribes 😉).

Quotes like this make me long for the good old days when this would have been a phrase forever memorialized as your custom avatar message. 😜
Dennis these are a badge of honor. I wear mine proudly and as a caution to others.😁

Knock off presige handbags are all over the place. Be sure to compare the price of the real thing with the price of a knock off. Find the real handbag, and the price won’t seem low relative to watch straps.

If the purse seem cheap, buy it and cut it into watch straps, sell off the excess and wash, rinse, repeat.

Brand is the most important thing to most women. 😉

Unlike men, who really don't care if their watch is Omega, Rolex, or Jaeger LeCoultre vs Roamer.

That's because nothing is ten times less - it's one tenth of the price 😉
Actually, it's one-tenth, not "one tenth," if we're going to nitpick one another's posts like that. 😉

As the forum's resident Zen Master, I'll answer the OP's question with another question:

Why do dogs dislike it when people blow lightly into their faces, yet insist on putting their heads out of car windows while traveling at relatively high speeds? 🙄
